Role Overview
This is a senior clinical leadership position within the hospital’s Critical Care Unit, covering both intensive care and high dependency settings. The role holder is responsible for maintaining high standards of patient care through direct oversight of daily operations, staff supervision, and resource management, while also acting as a clinical expert for complex cardiac and critical cases. Reporting to the Clinical Nurse Manager and Director of Medical Services, this role ensures that the ICU/HDU runs safely, efficiently, and in line with professional and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day functioning of the ICU/HDU, ensuring workflows are coordinated and patient care is delivered without interruption.
- Assess patient acuity and staff skill mix to make appropriate assignments and redistribute resources where needed.
- Delegate clinical and administrative tasks in line with legal scopes of practice and departmental policies.
- Serve as a point of escalation for clinical incidents, staffing concerns, and equipment issues, communicating promptly with the Clinical Nurse Manager.
- Provide hands-on patient care when required, particularly for high-acuity or unstable patients.
- Participate in and coordinate morbidity/mortality reviews and multidisciplinary team meetings to drive clinical improvement.
- Monitor and enforce internal controls, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and documentation standards.
- Take part in the second on-call rota, offering senior clinical support and decision-making outside normal working hours.
- Prepare and manage the departmental budget, including capital procurement and maintaining adequate medical supplies and functioning equipment.
- Conduct performance appraisals, identify training needs, and support staff development in collaboration with the HR department.
- Foster a culture of integrity, teamwork, and accountability, and promote staff welfare and professional growth.
- Lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives and provide regular reports on clinical and operational performance.
- Undertake any other duties assigned by the Director of Medical Services to support the hospital’s objectives.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) or equivalent medical degree.
- At least three years of experience as a Senior Medical Officer in a hospital setting.
- Minimum two years of hands-on experience in ICU or critical care.
- Clinical experience managing both adult and pediatric cardiac patients is essential.
- Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and develop clinical staff.
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience, including delegation and performance management.
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and possession of a valid practicing license.
- Postgraduate training (e.g., in critical care, internal medicine, or anesthesia) is an added advantage.
