Role Overview
This role focuses on maintaining and optimising the relational databases and enterprise systems that underpin the daily operations of a higher education institution. The database administrator ensures data availability, integrity, and security through robust backup strategies and restoration procedures, while also managing Active Directory and Windows Server environments. The position is critical for supporting the institution’s core administrative platform, Navision/Dynamics 365 BC, and for enabling seamless integrations with other systems through APIs.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and test data backup and recovery plans for relational databases to prevent data loss and minimise downtime.
- Manage and configure Active Directory services, including user accounts, group policies, and access controls.
- Administer Windows Server environments, applying updates, monitoring performance, and troubleshooting issues.
- Develop and maintain complex SQL or MySQL queries to support reporting, data extraction, and application functionality.
- Oversee the administration and configuration of Navision 2018 or Dynamics 365 Business Central, ensuring system stability and performance.
- Plan and execute integrations using RESTful, OData, JSON, and SOAP API services to connect databases with third-party applications.
- Collaborate with developers using cross-platform languages such as PHP, Python, C#, and JavaScript to resolve database-related issues and optimise queries.
- Monitor computer hardware and network infrastructure to ensure database servers run efficiently and securely.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or software engineering.
- At least three years of experience as a database administrator in an organisation comparable to a higher education institution.
- Strong knowledge of data backup strategies and restoration techniques for relational databases.
- Proven ability to configure and manage Active Directory services.
- High-level expertise in, and detailed understanding of, multiple functional areas across the institution (e.g., academic, financial, or administrative systems).
- Working knowledge of computer hardware and network fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience with Navision 2018 or Dynamics 365 Business Central.
- Experience with cross-platform development languages: PHP, Python, C#, and JavaScript.
- Experience designing and implementing integrations using RESTful, OData, JSON, and SOAP API services.
- Experience in Windows Server configuration and management.
- Experience designing and developing relational database queries in SQL or MySQL.
- Microsoft certification in Navision or Dynamics 365 Business Central.
- Current registration with the relevant professional body.
- Fulfilment of the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
