Job Description

The Tatu Coffee HSE Manager provides dedicated health, safety, and environmental oversight for all coffee operations across Kenya. This role balances industrial safety for processing plants with largescale agricultural safety management. The manager is responsible for ensuring "Zero Harm" across 6,500+ acres of estates while maintaining international certification standards and strictly adhering to Tatu City’s corporate governance.

Key Responsibilities

Oversight & Reporting

  • Centralized Reporting: Collect and review weekly HSE reports from all Coffee HSE Officers across the Kenyan farms.
  • Management Briefing: Consolidate and submit weekly reports to the Tatu Coffee CEO and the Tatu City Head of Department.
  • Incident Management: Lead comprehensive root-cause investigations for any on-site accidents or "near misses." Ensure that corrective actions are not only identified but fully implemented and monitored.

Agricultural & Technical Safety

  • Machinery Inspections: Ensure all farm and processing machinery are inspected daily. Verify that weekly inspection reports are transmitted to coffee management promptly.
  • High-Risk Activity Control: Manage and permit high-risk tasks, including electrical works, confined space entry (in processing plants), and hazardous chemical handling.
  • Estate Safety: Oversee safety protocols for worker welfare and the safe use of agro-inputs (fertilizers and pesticides) to minimize occupational exposure.

Compliance & Certification

  • Regulatory Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact for Kenyan regulatory bodies, specifically DOSHS and NEMA.
  • International Standards: Maintain and uphold Rainforest Alliance certification and ISO 45001/14001 standards, ensuring Tatu Coffee remains a leader in the international specialty market.
  • Policy Implementation: Ensure full implementation of all Kenyan and international safety regulations, aligning farm-level plans with Rendeavour’s corporate HSE policies.

Training & Culture

  • Training Delivery: Ensure the Tatu City Training Matrix is correctly delivered to all workers on all coffee farms in Kenya.
  • Drill Calendar: Manage and execute the annual Drill Calendar, including fire safety, chemical spills, and emergency evacuations.
  • Field Engagement: Facilitate regular "safety stand-downs" and daily toolbox talks to foster a proactive safety culture within the agricultural workforce.

Environmental & Waste Management

  • Resource Stewardship: Supervise on-site environmental initiatives such as water recycling and reforestation.
  • Waste Disposal: Implement responsible waste disposal systems to minimize the ecological footprint of coffee processing.

Requirements

  • Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive HSE experience in a busy coffee or tea farm safety management environment.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related Engineering field.
  • Certification: NEBOSH International Diploma and active membership in a professional body such as IOSH.
  • Compliance Knowledge: In-depth understanding of the OSHA 2007 (Kenya) and international agricultural safety benchmarks
