Role Overview
This position owns the day-to-day condition of the hospital’s physical environment, turning cleanliness and infection-control expectations into routines that staff can follow consistently. The Housekeeping Manager directs the cleaning team, adjusts coverage as patient volumes and department needs shift, and acts as the main point of contact for hygiene-related concerns across clinical and non-clinical areas. Success in this role protects patients, visitors, and employees from preventable risks while supporting the hospital’s reputation for safe, well-run care.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and supervise daily cleaning schedules for patient rooms, clinical units, public areas, offices, and support spaces, adjusting assignments when admissions, discharges, or emergencies change priorities.
- Lead, train, and coach housekeeping staff on hospital-grade cleaning methods, safe chemical handling, waste segregation, and infection-prevention practices.
- Inspect completed work across departments, document findings, and follow up on deficiencies until they meet established hygiene and safety standards.
- Coordinate with nursing, facilities, and infection-control teams to respond quickly to spills, isolation-room needs, terminal cleans, and other time-sensitive requests.
- Monitor cleaning supplies, linen, and equipment levels; place orders, track usage, and reduce waste without compromising availability.
- Maintain staff schedules, attendance records, and performance notes, covering shifts and arranging additional support during peak periods or staff absences.
- Reinforce hospital policies on safety, confidentiality, and patient dignity, ensuring team members work respectfully around patients and protected health information.
- Report recurring hygiene, maintenance, or equipment issues to hospital leadership and recommend practical improvements to workflows or cleaning protocols.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma centred on hospitality management, or an equivalent qualification in a related discipline.
- Three or more years spent in housekeeping within a hospital or similarly regulated care environment.
- Proven leadership presence, including the ability to schedule, guide, and motivate a housekeeping team.
- Strong organisational skills for juggling multiple priorities, inventory records, and inspection follow-ups.
- Working knowledge of hospital cleaning standards, infection control, and the safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
- Clear communication and interpersonal skills for coordinating with clinical staff, patients, and visitors.
