Job Description

Role Overview

This dual-purpose position places you at the heart of a busy building materials outlet in Githurai 44, where you will serve as both the first point of contact for customers and the person responsible for accurate cash handling. You will spend your day on the sales floor assisting contractors and homeowners with product selection, operating the till, and keeping the shop organised and fully stocked. Your reliability matters to the employer because every transaction and every inventory count directly affects daily revenue and trust with regular clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet customers as they enter the hardware shop and guide them to the correct aisle or product category, whether they need cement, timber, plumbing fittings, paint, electrical supplies, or hand tools.
  • Advise builders and walk-in clients on material specifications, suitable alternatives, approximate quantities for common jobs, and any complementary products that would complete their purchase.
  • Handle the full sales transaction using the POS system, accurately recording cash, mobile-money, and card payments while issuing itemised receipts.
  • Balance the cash drawer at the start and end of each shift, produce a daily cash summary, and report any discrepancies to management immediately.
  • Respond to customer questions about product usage and returns, ensuring every visitor leaves with a positive impression of the shop and its service.
  • Monitor stock levels on the shelves, carry out periodic inventory counts, and replenish display stock so that high-demand items remain available.
  • Receive supplier deliveries, compare delivered quantities against invoices, and document any damaged or missing goods before they are signed off.
  • Record daily sales figures and pricing updates in spreadsheets so management has accurate, up-to-date information for ordering and planning.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised institution.
  • At least two years of hands-on experience in a hardware shop, building materials store, or comparable retail environment.
  • Sound working knowledge of common construction materials, tools, electrical fittings, plumbing components, and paint products.
  • Practical computer skills, including comfortable use of POS retail software and Microsoft Office applications such as Excel.
  • High level of honesty and integrity, since you will handle cash and manage inventory records on a daily basis.
  • Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail for cash reconciliation and stock counts.
  • Excellent verbal communication and customer-facing interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain product features clearly to both trade professionals and ordinary homeowners.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to lift, move, and arrange heavy hardware items such as bags of cement, timber lengths, and metal piping.

What We Offer / Why Join

This is a full-time, on-site opportunity based in Githurai 44, Nairobi/Kiambu, with a fixed monthly salary of KSh 25,000. You will be part of a growing hardware retail business where your product knowledge and reliable cashiering make a direct contribution to the shop's reputation and daily success.
