Role Overview
This role carries out masonry construction and repair work on building projects, turning drawings and specifications into durable walls, foundations, and finished surfaces. The person in this position mixes and applies mortar, lays bricks, blocks, and stone, and checks that every element is level, plumb, and properly aligned. Their work directly affects the structural strength, weather resistance, and final quality of the built works.
Key Responsibilities
- Read drawings, sketches, and work instructions to determine materials, dimensions, and the correct sequence of masonry tasks.
- Set out lines, levels, and reference points, and prepare surfaces before laying begins.
- Mix mortar, cement, and bonding materials to the right consistency for the masonry unit and site conditions.
- Lay bricks, blocks, stones, and similar units in courses, keeping walls straight, square, plumb, and level.
- Cut, trim, and shape masonry materials with hand tools and power cutters to fit openings, corners, and details.
- Build and repair foundations, walls, partitions, piers, columns, steps, and other masonry structures.
- Install damp-proof courses, reinforcement, ties, lintels, and related components as required by the work.
- Finish joints, clean completed surfaces, inspect for defects, and carry out remedial work while keeping tools and the work area safe.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Completion of a Craft Certificate in Masonry; or a Building Technology qualification at Level Five (5) stage.
- At least one (1) year of relevant hands-on experience in masonry or building construction.
- Practical knowledge of brick, block, and stone laying, mortar mixing, and basic concrete work.
- Ability to read simple construction drawings and apply measurements, levels, and setting-out techniques.
- Skill in using masonry hand tools, power cutters, mixers, and standard site equipment safely.
- Understanding of construction site safety, including working at heights, manual handling, and correct use of protective equipment.
- Physical fitness, hand-eye coordination, and stamina for sustained outdoor work.
- Reliability, teamwork, and the ability to follow instructions and meet work schedules.
