Green Focus Intern

Role Overview

This internship places you at the heart of our Green Focus programme, where learners spend regular time in the forest, shamba, wetland, and outdoor classroom. You will work alongside educators to run practical environmental lessons, supervise children during hands-on activities, and help keep our outdoor learning spaces safe, tidy, and ready for use. Your contribution directly supports the school's mission to connect children with nature through real, meaningful outdoor work.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in delivering Green Focus sessions across the forest, shamba, wetland, and outdoor classroom, helping with demonstrations, group rotations, and individual learner support.
• Supervise learners during outdoor activities, keeping a watchful eye on safety, especially around tools, water, animals, and uneven terrain.
• Support positive behaviour by reinforcing school expectations calmly and consistently during transitions, group tasks, and free exploration time.
• Guide learners through practical tasks such as planting, composting, watering, harvesting, habitat construction, and species observation.
• Maintain Green Focus areas, including the shamba, forest trails, duck and tortoise enclosures, compost systems, and the outdoor classroom itself.
• Help prepare lesson materials, build displays, create teaching resources, and organise equipment needed for each session.
• Contribute ideas to improve outdoor learning experiences and participate in school-wide sustainability events and community projects.
• Uphold safeguarding policies and the school's behaviour code in all interactions with learners, staff, and visitors.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Demonstrated interest in environmental education, conservation, ecology, gardening, agriculture, sustainability, or outdoor learning — either through study, volunteering, or personal projects.
• Previous experience working with children in any setting is strongly preferred, particularly in outdoor or forest-based environments.
• Hands-on gardening, farming, or outdoor project experience is an advantage.
• Familiarity with local plants, animals, or ecosystems is helpful but not required.
• A clear understanding of child safety principles, including the unique risks of outdoor and nature-based learning.
• Ability to respond to behaviour in a firm, kind, and consistent manner, while maintaining a positive rapport with learners.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative attitude when working with teachers, interns, and support staff.
• Practical, self-motivated, and observant, with a willingness to take initiative and learn new skills.
• Completed police clearance or background check, plus certified copies of relevant academic or professional documents.
• At least two professional references who can speak to your reliability and suitability for working with children.
