Director, Enterprise Architecture and Integrations

Role Overview

This role is accountable for the technical backbone of a large enterprise application portfolio, spanning D365, Workday, ServiceNow, Box, M365, and a range of custom-built solutions. You will define and enforce integration patterns, architecture standards, and governance processes that allow dozens of systems to work together cleanly, while also managing the teams that build and support integrations and custom applications. The work matters because the organization currently relies on informal, person-held knowledge for many architectural decisions, and you will be the person who turns that into durable, documented, and repeatable standards.

Day to day, you will balance hands-on technical leadership—reviewing integration designs, troubleshooting failed transactions, and setting technical direction—with people management, budget oversight, and cross-team coordination. You will spend significant time working with leaders across AI, data, infrastructure, and enterprise applications to align boundaries and ensure each platform fits into a coherent whole. Early on, expect to be deeply involved in the actual engineering work; as the team grows, your focus shifts toward governance, hiring, and holding delivery teams accountable to the standards you set.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and own the enterprise integration architecture: the patterns, tooling, and conventions that keep integrations maintainable, observable, and consistent across every platform in the portfolio.
• Set and enforce a configure-before-develop standard across the application landscape, reviewing new solution requests and platform changes to determine whether custom engineering is truly necessary or whether existing platform capabilities can meet the need.
• Establish enterprise architecture governance from the ground up: create architecture principles, define a formal review process, assign clear decision rights for architectural choices, and embed those rights into how solutions are proposed, funded, and approved.
• Document integration and architecture boundaries that have historically existed only in people’s heads, so that organizational knowledge survives individual tenure and teams can make consistent decisions.
• Lead, manage, and develop the integration and custom applications team, the Drupal team, and the Azure platform engineers—setting priorities, managing workload, supporting career growth, and ensuring delivery meets quality bars.
• Manage the team budget, track actual spending against planned forecasts, and support recruitment efforts as the team scales.
• Partner with the Head of AI, the data team leadership, and the GIS/infrastructure organization to negotiate and document shared boundaries across AI initiatives, data architecture, Azure hosting, and the enterprise application portfolio.
• Maintain up-to-date documentation of architecture decisions, integration patterns, and technical standards; surface technical debt and architectural risk openly rather than presenting closed plans.

Requirements & Qualifications

• 8+ years of IT experience focused on enterprise applications or architecture, with at least 3 years in a formal leadership role managing engineers, team leads, or architects.
• Strong working knowledge of enterprise platforms including ERP (D365 Finance and Operations), HCM (Workday), ITSM (ServiceNow), and collaboration suites (M365, Box).
• Deep experience with enterprise integration patterns, API management, and integration tooling in a multi-platform environment—including hands-on familiarity with APIs, messaging, and event-driven architectures.
• Demonstrated success establishing enterprise architecture governance: defining principles, setting up review boards, and making architecture decision rights part of how the organization funds and prioritizes technology work.
• Hands-on background in application development and integration delivery—you should be comfortable reviewing code, designing an integration yourself, and troubleshooting production issues directly, especially in the early months.
• Proven ability to hold delivery teams accountable to technical standards, while also knowing when to push back on unnecessary custom development and steer toward build-versus-configure tradeoffs.
• Budget management experience for technology teams, including forecasting and tracking spend.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain architectural decisions to executives, engineers, and non-technical stakeholders—and the comfort to raise open questions and risks without sugarcoating.
• Experience leading custom application and web teams; Drupal experience is a plus.
• Preferred: experience in a nonprofit, international development, or humanitarian sector IT environment; experience coordinating architecture boundaries across infrastructure and applications teams; familiarity with API management platforms (Azure APIM, Apigee); event-driven and messaging systems (Azure Service Bus, Kafka); cloud-native integration tooling (Azure Functions, Logic Apps, iPaaS); and serverless or microservices patterns.
