Job Description
Role Overview
As a Dental Technologist, you will work behind the scenes in a dental laboratory, translating dentists’ prescriptions into functional and comfortable dental appliances. Your precision directly influences patient outcomes, from restoring smiles with dentures to supporting orthodontic treatment with removable devices. Each day involves hands-on fabrication work, careful quality checks, and close coordination with supervising dental professionals to ensure every appliance fits and functions as intended.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret dental prescriptions and patient work orders, clarifying any ambiguities with the supervising dentist before beginning fabrication.
- Plan and construct complete and partial dentures, selecting appropriate materials and ensuring accurate fit, alignment, and occlusion.
- Build removable Hawley appliances and habit breakers, shaping wires and acrylic bases to meet orthodontic specifications.
- Fabricate acrylic crowns and bridges, layering and curing materials to achieve the required shape, strength, and aesthetics.
- Compile and submit itemized lists of dental materials, tools, and consumables needed for laboratory operations to your supervisor for procurement.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, following infection control protocols to protect both patients and laboratory staff.
- Participate in oral and dental health promotion activities, sharing technical knowledge with community groups or clinical teams when required.
- Conduct final inspections of completed appliances, checking for defects, sharp edges, or fitting issues before releasing them for patient use.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Dental Technology or an equivalent qualification obtained from a recognized institution.
- Current certificate of registration with the Kenya Dental Technologists Association.
- Solid understanding of dental anatomy, materials science, and laboratory equipment used in prosthetics and orthodontics.
- Practical skill in working with acrylics, wires, and dental stone to fabricate precise and durable appliances.
- Ability to read and interpret technical dental prescriptions with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Good manual dexterity and patience for tasks that require fine motor control and iterative adjustments.
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize multiple lab cases and track work-in-progress efficiently.
