Job Description

Role Overview

You will join the International Health Data Engineering team, the group responsible for operating and improving the data integration hub that feeds Cigna's international health delivery services. Your day-to-day work involves building and maintaining the ETL pipelines and SQL Server systems that pull data from policy administration platforms and make it available to internal portals, external integrations, and downstream analytics teams. Beyond keeping existing processes running smoothly, you'll help define how future data solutions are architected and coded, collaborating with colleagues across different technology disciplines and geographies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain ETL processes and data integration solutions within the International Health Data Engineering environment.
  • Diagnose and resolve SQL Server-related performance and functional issues, ensuring data pipelines remain reliable and efficient.
  • Work alongside senior database developers to gather requirements, translate business needs into technical designs, and contribute to project workshops and planning sessions.
  • Implement changes in T-SQL and SSIS for both ongoing operational work (business as usual) and larger project delivery streams.
  • Model and document data mapping solutions, collaborating with business and technical stakeholders to select the most appropriate approach.
  • Support regular release cycles and monitor scheduled data batch jobs, proactively identifying and addressing failures or bottlenecks.
  • Recommend improvements to code quality, tooling, and engineering workflows, bringing your own ideas to how the team develops and delivers.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of hands-on experience developing and supporting SQL Server solutions in a production environment.
  • Strong expertise in T-SQL, including writing and optimising complex stored procedures, views, and functions.
  • Solid understanding of database fundamentals, with proven ability in query optimisation and performance tuning.
  • Experience building ETL routines with SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services).
  • Working knowledge of both OLAP and OLTP environments, and how they differ in design and operational requirements.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, particularly the ability to reverse engineer complex, unfamiliar code to understand its logic and identify defects.
  • Experience working within Agile development methodologies, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and iterative delivery.
  • Exposure to C# and Python is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with modern data engineering technologies such as PySpark and Databricks is a plus.
  • Basic experience with cloud technologies and services is advantageous.
  • Exposure to source control tools (e.g., Git) and CI/CD practices is preferred.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, or similar is beneficial.
  • Prior experience working with health insurance or healthcare data is a strong asset.
