Data Engineering Advisor

Role Overview

This Senior Developer position belongs to the International Health Data Engineering team, which operates the central data integration hub that collects information from policy administration systems and feeds it to a wide range of downstream consumers, including internal platforms, external partners, and customer-facing web portals. Your primary focus will be the design, delivery, and ongoing support of ETL and data integration solutions built on Microsoft SQL Server, with a strong emphasis on reliability, performance, and data quality. In this role, you will act as the technical authority for complex data initiatives, shape the engineering standards used by the team, and step in to resolve the most difficult issues that could otherwise interrupt the flow of business-critical data.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the principal designer and technical lead for complex data initiatives, from initial concept through deployment and support.
• Design, develop, document, test, and maintain ETL processes and data integration solutions to ensure accurate and timely data delivery.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex SQL Server issues, including performance bottlenecks, deadlocks, and data anomalies, while performing root cause analysis.
• Model and document data mapping solutions, working closely with business stakeholders and technical teams to define the best approach for each integration.
• Support regular release cycles and monitor scheduled data processing batches, ensuring all jobs complete successfully and data remains consistent.
• Proactively identify and implement improvements to existing code, engineering tools, and overall ways of working within the team.
• Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other developers, helping to elevate the team's overall engineering capability.
• Collaborate with teams across different technical disciplines and geographies, contributing to broader initiatives and sharing subject-matter expertise.

Requirements & Qualifications

• At least 8 years of experience delivering data solutions, including a minimum of 5 years specifically focused on Microsoft SQL Server development and support.
• Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership and mentoring to other developers or team members.
• Advanced T-SQL skills, including the development and optimization of stored procedures, views, and functions.
• Strong understanding of database design principles, data modelling, query optimization, and performance tuning strategies.
• Hands-on experience developing and supporting ETL solutions using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
• Solid working knowledge of both OLTP and OLAP database environments.
• Proven ability to analyse business requirements and translate them into robust, maintainable technical solutions.
• Experience using source control and CI/CD pipelines for database development and deployment.
• Strong troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and problem resolution skills, with an ability to work effectively under pressure.
• Experience working in Agile development environments and contributing to iterative delivery cycles.

Desirable Experience

• Programming skills in C# and Python.
• Experience with modern data engineering technologies such as PySpark and Databricks.
• Working knowledge of cloud technologies and services, particularly in a data engineering context.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, or similar.
• Prior experience working with health insurance or healthcare data.
