Role Overview
This is a field-facing programme role for someone who is equally comfortable sitting with a community group under a tree and defending a budget line in a review meeting. The post holder takes responsibility for turning identified community needs into planned, funded and properly documented activities — working closely with local partners, keeping child and youth safeguarding central to every engagement, and ensuring that spending, timelines and narrative reports hold up to internal and donor scrutiny. The value of the role lies in the bridge it builds: between the organisation's commitments and the communities it serves on one side, and the state departments, civil society organisations and corporate partners it works with on the other.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop programme concepts and workplans from the ground up, translating community-level priorities into activities with clear objectives, timelines and resource requirements.
- Coordinate day-to-day implementation across assigned project sites, troubleshooting delays and adjusting plans as conditions change.
- Apply child and youth safeguarding standards in practice — screening partners and volunteers, briefing communities, and responding to concerns in line with policy.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with community leadership, county and national government departments, peer CSOs and private sector partners.
- Prepare and monitor activity budgets, track expenditure against plans, and produce accurate financial and narrative reports for internal and donor audiences.
- Facilitate trainings, community meetings and stakeholder forums, representing the organisation credibly in public and official settings.
- Maintain programme records and databases, capturing monitoring data and lessons learned to inform future design.
- Supervise and support field teams, community mobilisers or partner staff involved in delivery.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Development Studies, Project Management, Community Development Studies, or another relevant social science discipline.
- At least three years of relevant working experience, ideally gained within an NGO or comparable development setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of child and youth safeguarding guidelines and how they translate into everyday programme practice.
- A proven record of designing, innovating within, and managing programmes from inception through to completion.
- Experience nurturing mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships with communities, key state departments, civil society organisations and corporate entities.
- Competence in budget preparation, expenditure tracking and financial reporting.
- Strong communication, facilitation, presentation and representation abilities, with the confidence to engage people from widely different backgrounds and to motivate and inspire them.
- Solid computer literacy, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and familiarity with database systems.
- Well-developed organisational, analytical and programmatic reporting skills.
- Capacity to plan, prioritise and execute under pressure, juggling multiple tasks while remaining accountable for results and the achievement of objectives.
- An enthusiastic, decisive and pragmatic approach, with a sense of urgency, close attention to detail and thoroughness in follow-through.
- A valid Certificate of Good Conduct issued within the last six months.
Additional note: The positions cover Bungoma, Turkana and Kilifi Counties. Female candidates and applicants who speak the local dialect of the respective county are at an added advantage.
