Job Summary:
The Head of Department is responsible for coordinating all student activities, teaching assigned subjects, supervising clinical education, and ensuring compliance with academic and regulatory standards. This role includes evaluating student progress, mentoring research projects, and fostering holistic development.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and oversee all student activities within the department to ensure a comprehensive and enriching educational experience.
- Teach assigned subjects according to the curriculum, ensuring that all instructional materials and methods meet academic standards.
- Prepare exams and marking schemes for topics taught and submit these materials to the Department Chair for review and approval.
- Supervise and coordinate all student activities in clinical areas, ensuring that students gain practical experience and meet clinical competencies.
- Provide supervision and guidance to clinical instructors to maintain high standards of clinical education and training.
- Evaluate students after each block or trimester using the Behavioural Theoretical Assessment Form to ensure their progress and competency.
- Assess students in clinical placements according to the guidelines set by the regulatory body, ensuring compliance and quality training.
- Ensure that students working in the wards successfully complete all assigned criteria during each placement, facilitating their professional development.
- Assist students with research projects as assigned by the Principal or Research Teacher, providing mentorship and support throughout the research process.
- Act as Class Advisor when assigned by the Principal, offering guidance and support to students in their academic and professional pursuits.
- Participate actively in the spiritual growth of students, fostering an environment of holistic development.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Medicine & Surgery, Nursing, Health Sciences or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Diploma in Education; must comply with Ministry of Education requirements for the HoD position.
- Licensed with the Nursing Council of Kenya or Clinical Officers Council/Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA).
- Registration with and a valid license from the Clinical Officers Council (COC) or Nursing Council of Kenya.
