Role Overview
Working within a membership network that brings together trusts, foundations, grantmakers, and organisations that support philanthropy without making grants, the Communications Officer owns how the network is perceived and understood by its audiences. This is a practical, hands-on role: developing and implementing communication strategies, producing content across digital and print formats, and coordinating outreach around events, research, and member activities. The officer also serves as a communications advisor to colleagues and helps strengthen long-term relationships with members, media contacts, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and drive a communications plan that supports the network’s strategic goals, reviewing and updating it to reflect emerging priorities and opportunities.
- Write, edit, and publish a range of materials including press releases, media briefing notes, speeches, fact sheets, brochures, web pages, and social media content, ensuring consistent brand messaging.
- Manage the network’s website, data portal, and social media profiles, keeping content fresh, accurate, and engaging, and responding to enquiries received through these channels.
- Produce the monthly newsletter and other regular bulletins for internal teams, members, and external stakeholders.
- Lead communication and promotion for conferences, workshops, forums, roundtables, and public engagements, working with project teams to turn event outcomes into shareable knowledge.
- Monitor press coverage and relevant policy, development, and philanthropy agendas to identify proactive media opportunities and keep the network visible among regional audiences.
- Equip and support colleagues across the organisation to contribute to communications efforts through advice, content ideas, messaging guidance, and best-practice sharing.
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, partner organisations, governments, embassies, NGOs, and members, and use social media tools to map stakeholders and identify potential new members.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, international relations, or a related field.
- At least three to five years of professional experience in communications, media relations, or content production, preferably within a nonprofit, membership organisation, or philanthropic network.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex research and organisational themes into clear, accessible content for different audiences.
- Hands-on experience managing websites and social media channels, including content management systems and content calendars.
- Proven ability to draft press releases and build working relationships with media outlets.
- Excellent organisational and project management skills, comfortable handling multiple deadlines and publication cycles.
- A collaborative and proactive approach, with experience advising colleagues or stakeholders on communications matters.
- Familiarity with data portals, basic design tools, or email marketing platforms is an added advantage.
