Job Description

Role Overview

This position is for a junior-to-mid-level surveyor who will execute a mix of office and fieldwork across cadastral, topographical, and engineering survey projects. You will be responsible for capturing accurate spatial data, establishing control points, processing observations, and producing clear plans and reports that support land registration, subdivision, and construction. Your work directly underpins legal boundary determinations and infrastructure design, so precision, compliance with Kenyan surveying standards, and careful record-keeping are essential on every assignment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct field surveys for cadastral, topographical, subdivisional, and engineering purposes, including establishing horizontal and vertical control networks.
  • Operate and calibrate survey instruments such as automatic levels, total stations, and GNSS/GPS receivers, ensuring field measurements are collected accurately and systematically.
  • Perform preliminary quality checks on survey data and boundary computations, identifying discrepancies before final mapping and submission.
  • Retrieve and verify relevant land records, geodetic data, and survey information from government registries and other authorised institutions.
  • Process raw field observations using surveying and design software, adjusting computations and coordinating geometry as required.
  • Generate maps, cadastral plans, engineering drawings, and survey diagrams that meet statutory formatting and presentation requirements.
  • Compile comprehensive field reports, documenting methodology, control points, measurements, and any encountered issues or limitations.
  • Maintain survey equipment through routine cleaning, battery management, and calibration checks, reporting any defects or repair needs promptly.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in land surveying and photogrammetry, geomatics, geomatic engineering, geoinformatics, geo-spatial engineering, or a closely related technology field from a recognised institution.
  • Affiliate or associate membership with the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya (ISK), specifically within the Land Surveyors or Engineering Surveyors chapter.
  • A valid practising certificate issued by the Land Surveyors’ Board (LSB) of Kenya.
  • Certificate in computer application skills, including proficiency in spreadsheets, word processing, and survey-related software.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate total stations, automatic levels, and GPS/GNSS equipment in outdoor environments, often under time-sensitive field conditions.
  • Familiarity with Kenyan cadastral procedures, boundary law fundamentals, and the statutory requirements for survey plans and reports.
  • Strong analytical skills for data processing, error identification, and spatial problem-solving.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, including relevant clearances and declarations.
