Role Overview
This position owns interior design work end to end on construction and fit-out projects — translating a client's brief into buildable drawings, then staying involved on site until the finished space matches what was drawn. Working largely without a supervisor, the designer acts as the lead creative and technical point of contact for clients, consultants, and contractors, keeping quality, cost, and schedule aligned from first concept sketch through handover. The role also carries responsibility for the upkeep and upgrade of existing facilities, so the person in it shapes both new interiors and the long-term condition of buildings already in use.
Key Responsibilities
- Concept and design development: Interpret client briefs into creative, functional interior schemes; produce concept boards, finish and material selections, space plans, rendered visuals, and presentation packages for approval.
- Technical documentation: Prepare detailed interior drawings, specifications, finish schedules, and setting-out information that contractors can build from, ensuring proposals comply with building regulations, fire and safety requirements, and company standards.
- Independent project delivery: Run assigned interior projects from initial survey through to handover with minimal oversight, setting the design direction and defending design intent throughout construction.
- Multi-party coordination: Liaise with architects, structural and MEP engineers, quantity surveyors, main contractors, and suppliers; conduct site surveys, attend progress meetings, and resolve on-site design conflicts with practical, buildable solutions.
- Client management: Meet clients to establish requirements and preferences, present and defend proposals, secure sign-offs, give regular status updates, and handle concerns quickly to protect the relationship and generate repeat work.
- Cost control: Build project estimates and material schedules, keep designs within approved budgets, propose value alternatives where needed, and flag the cost impact of any design variation to management and the client.
- Site inspection and quality assurance: Carry out regular site visits, check that workmanship and installed materials match approved specifications, issue observation reports, and recommend corrective action until the required standard is met.
- Facilities upkeep and renovation: Assess the condition of existing facilities, plan maintenance and renovation schedules, and oversee repairs, preventive maintenance, alterations, and refurbishment works — coordinating contractors and suppliers and verifying completed work against agreed specifications, budgets, and timelines.
- Procurement and records: Source finishes, furniture, fittings, and décor, evaluate supplier samples and quotations, track deliveries against installation schedules, and maintain organised project files covering drawings, approvals, correspondence, and progress reports.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a closely related discipline; a professional interior design certification is an advantage.
- At least 6 years of hands-on interior design experience with a strong track record in construction and fit-out project execution.
- Demonstrated ability to take interior fit-out projects from concept to completion independently, without day-to-day supervision.
- Exposure to commercial, residential, hospitality, or corporate interior projects is desirable.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, 3ds Max, Lumion, or comparable design and visualisation software.
- Solid space planning and visualisation ability, plus working knowledge of interior materials, finishes, furniture types, and construction methods.
- Understanding of building maintenance, facility renovation, and repair planning.
- Strong project coordination and organisational skills, with the capacity to run several projects in parallel.
- Confident communication and presentation skills for client and consultant-facing work.
- Sound problem-solving and decision-making under pressure, with the judgement to solve design issues on site as they arise.
- High attention to detail and a firm commitment to quality standards and deadline delivery.
