Job Description

Role Overview

As a Cardiac Sonographer, you will perform comprehensive echocardiography examinations for patients ranging from infants to adults, working closely with physicians to identify and report cardiac abnormalities. Your daily work involves operating ultrasound equipment, reviewing medical histories, and preparing preliminary findings that directly influence treatment decisions in a high-acuity clinical setting. This role is vital to delivering Christ-centered, high-quality cardiac care at a mission-driven hospital serving a broad community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review patient records, including lab results, history, and physician orders, to confirm exam appropriateness and gather clinical context.
  • Conduct 2D, color flow, and spectral Doppler echocardiograms to evaluate cardiac structure, function, and hemodynamic significance of lesions or pathology.
  • Recognize urgent or critical findings and promptly communicate them to the interpreting physician or clinical team.
  • Perform bedside echocardiograms in ICUs, wards, emergency rooms, catheterization labs, and operating rooms as needed.
  • Assist during stress echocardiography (dobutamine or exercise) and administer contrast studies under protocol.
  • Place EKG leads accurately for cardiac monitoring and maintain proper lead placement during exams.
  • Document preliminary impressions and final reports in electronic systems, and guide patients on follow-up care or further testing.
  • Train and mentor junior staff or trainees in basic echocardiographic techniques and patient positioning.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (for Clinical Officers) or Diploma in Medical Imaging (for Radiology Technologists) from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate certificate, preceptorship, or higher diploma in Cardiac Sonography.
  • Current BLS certification; ACLS strongly preferred.
  • Active licensure with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya or the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (for radiographers).
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience performing cardiac echo and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Proven integrity, accountability, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact compassionately with patients and families.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize urgent exams, and adapt to changing clinical demands.
