Job Description

Role Overview

You will be part of a backend engineering team building and refining the server-side systems that power healthcare technology products used by clinicians, patients, and internal staff. Your day-to-day work involves designing APIs, improving database interactions, and shipping reliable backend services that keep critical health workflows running smoothly. The role matters because the quality and stability of this code directly impacts how effectively the organisation can deliver secure, responsive, and compliant digital care solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, write, and maintain backend services in Go and/or Python, following internal standards for code quality, performance, and security.
  • Refactor and optimise existing server-side modules to reduce technical debt, improve response times, and fix root causes of recurring issues.
  • Build and evolve REST and GraphQL APIs, then partner with frontend developers to ensure clean integration between backend services and user interfaces.
  • Translate product requirements into technical designs and implement new features that account for scalability, maintainability, and real-world usage patterns.
  • Develop comprehensive test coverage, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, to catch regressions and maintain confidence in every release.
  • Manage relational database schemas, write efficient SQL queries, and use ORM libraries to support new and existing business processes.
  • Connect internal systems with external services and third-party APIs, handling asynchronous events and ensuring reliable data flow end to end.
  • Participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and share knowledge with teammates to raise collective engineering standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, a related scientific field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 3 years of professional backend development experience, with strong proficiency in either Golang or Python (or both).
  • Solid understanding of system design principles, including how to build reliable, scalable, and maintainable distributed or monolithic backend services.
  • Strong knowledge of API design patterns, particularly REST and GraphQL, with a track record of developing clear, efficient, and versioned interfaces.
  • Hands-on experience with relational databases, SQL, and ORM libraries, including schema design, indexing, and query optimisation.
  • Familiarity with event-driven programming, asynchronous processing, and integrating backend services with external APIs.
  • Working knowledge of authentication, authorisation, and data-protection best practices relevant to healthcare or other regulated environments.
  • Experience writing automated tests at multiple levels (unit, integration, end-to-end) and using them to drive code quality.
  • Proficiency with Git and version-control workflows, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative code review.
  • Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting skills, and the ability to break down ambiguous problems into practical technical solutions.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Comfort working in a Linux-based development environment and using standard developer tooling.
