Google Search’s AI Evolution Includes More Ads
Google’s AI-powered Search era now extends to its advertising. When you search for a product, Google’s Gemini AI model surfaces relevant items and generates a custom explainer about why you should purchase a specific one. This update follows Google’s introduction of a new Search box for larger, conversational queries and a focus on AI-generated results.
For example, searching for a “compact espresso pod machine” may show a Nespresso Vertuo Up under a “Sponsored Product” label, alongside an AI-generated description highlighting capsule compatibility, flavor diversity, rich crema, fast heat-up, and one-touch options for custom cup sizes and iced coffee.
AI Chatbots Built Into Ads
Search will also surface ads with a built-in chatbot. These ads feature an “Ask a question” button, allowing users to start a conversation with Gemini. The AI chatbot uses information from the product or service’s website to answer questions and can prompt users to fill out a form to connect with the business.
New Ad Formats in AI Mode
Google is testing new ads within AI Mode, its chatbot-style Search experience. First introduced last year with “sponsored” results, these ad formats are now more prominent.
Sponsored Product Answers
One option surfaces a sponsored product that answers a specific question, like “What are some low-maintenance ways to make my home smell amazing?” AI Mode may present a sponsored result for an air freshener, complete with a product description and images. The ad can take up the entire screen when scrolled over.
Recommendations with Sponsored Items
Another pilot format prominently shows sponsored products or services within a list of recommendations. For instance, searching for a language-learning service could display an ad for Duolingo at the bottom of the list, with information about the app’s features.
Google’s Vision for AI Ads
“We’re reinventing ads for AI Search so they feel like helpful additions to your conversation,” says Vidhya Srinivasan, Google’s vice president of ads and commerce. “These next-generation ad formats close the gap between a person’s initial question and their final purchase, while making it easier to discover new brands along the way.”
