Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicts that within five years, billions of people will have their own personal AI agents working around the clock. Speaking on the company's quarterly earnings call, Zuckerberg described a future where these agents understand user goals and act autonomously across multiple domains.
Zuckerberg highlighted applications in finance management, healthcare, interpersonal relationships, and household organization. He believes these agents will operate 24/7 on behalf of users, far beyond simple question-answering systems.
Meta envisions WhatsApp and its messaging platforms as central to this vision. According to Zuckerberg, WhatsApp is already the leading platform for interactions with Meta AI, and as users engage with multiple agents, messaging surfaces will become increasingly important.
Meta continues to pour massive capital into AI projects, despite investor skepticism. The company's stock dropped nearly 10% after the latest earnings report, reflecting concerns over spending.
Meta's Reality Labs division, responsible for AR glasses and VR headsets, lost approximately $4.6 billion this quarter — matching its average quarterly loss since 2021, totaling nearly $88 billion. Combined with AI spending, free cash flow plummeted.
Meta reported free cash flow of $784 million, down from $8.55 billion in the same quarter last year — a 91% decline. The drop is largely attributed to investments in AI infrastructure.
This week, Meta and BlackRock announced a partnership to build a $14 billion data center in El Paso, Texas. Zuckerberg emphasized that selling intelligence will yield higher margins than selling compute alone, but acknowledged a big opportunity in compute as well.
Meta is not alone in chasing AI agents. Competitors like Google and Anthropic are also making aggressive moves.
Google emphasized custom AI agents in its Search overhaul, though user backlash followed. Meanwhile, Anthropic's Claude subscription surged as engineers adopted its agentic coding assistant, Claude Code.
Meta's business agents, rolled out globally on WhatsApp and Messenger this quarter, have been adopted by more than one million businesses. Consumer AI agents may prove harder to scale, but Zuckerberg believes personal agents will form the foundation for Meta's next wave of products and revenue.
While enterprise adoption is strong, achieving billions of consumer AI agents requires broader acceptance. Meta sees this as a long-term play, starting from the current business base. Zuckerberg remains confident that personal agents will drive future growth, despite the financial hurdles and competitive landscape.
