Role Overview
This is a hands-on operational role combining waste collection support with janitorial duties for a well-established environmental services company based in Karen, Nairobi. You will ride along with a collection driver, handle heavy refuse bins and bulk waste, and then clean and sanitize every pickup point and the truck itself before the shift ends. Your work directly keeps residential and commercial routes running on time, keeps sites safe and hygienic, and helps the company maintain its reputation for responsible waste handling.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the waste truck driver on daily scheduled routes across Karen’s residential estates and commercial areas, helping with navigation, access, and timely collections.
- Manually lift, load, and secure waste bags, wheeled bins, and loose bulk refuse onto the truck using safe lifting techniques to prevent injury and spillage.
- Check each collection point before and after pickup, note missed or incomplete collections, and report blocked gates or inaccessible routes to the operations supervisor.
- Unload waste at designated transfer stations, ensuring the truck bed is emptied completely and that any debris falling during unloading is promptly cleaned up.
- Sanitize and disinfect bin storage areas, loading bays, and surrounding surfaces after every waste removal, leaving the site clean and odor-free.
- Wash and maintain collection tools, truck beds, and janitorial equipment at the end of each shift, including checking for wear and damage.
- Prepare and safely handle chemical cleaning solutions and disinfectants, storing them properly and using them only in line with safety guidelines.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment, watch for hazardous spills or damaged containers, and report any environmental or safety risks immediately.
Requirements & Qualifications
- At least 3 years of active, hands-on experience in waste collection, janitorial services, commercial sanitation, or facilities upkeep.
- A certificate or diploma in cleaning, waste management, environmental health, or a directly related field is required.
- Previous work in commercial, high-end residential, or institutional settings is strongly preferred, as these environments demand higher hygiene and presentation standards.
- Solid practical knowledge of waste segregation, safe lifting methods, occupational safety, and sanitation protocols.
- Excellent physical stamina, with the ability to perform heavy manual loading, bending, and outdoor work for the full shift in varying weather conditions.
- Strong teamwork skills to coordinate smoothly with truck drivers, estate supervisors, and property managers under time pressure.
- Candidates currently living in or around Karen, Dagoretti, Ngong, or Lang’ata are particularly encouraged to apply, as the role starts and ends at the Karen base.
