Position Title: Technician (Fibre & Wireless)
Industry: Information Technology / ISP
Gross Salary: KES 40,000
Primary Location: Nairobi (with occasional upcountry travel)
Role Purpose
We are seeking a disciplined and solution-oriented Fibre Technician to join a fast-growing ISP team. This role is a high-impact, field-based position focused on the deployment and upkeep of our fibre optic and wireless infrastructure. You will be the technical lead on the ground, ensuring that FTTH, FTTB, and backbone connectivity meet rigorous standards. From fusion splicing in manholes to configuring high-end ONTs for enterprise clients, you will be responsible for the entire physical layer of the network. We need a professional who takes pride in neat, standards-compliant work and can resolve complex network faults within tight SLA windows.
Functional Responsibilities
Installation & Infrastructure Provisioning

Install and terminate single-mode and multi-mode fibre cables for aerial, ducted, and underground builds.

Execute high-precision fusion splicing using industry-standard machines (Fujikura, Sumitomo, or INNO).

Mount and configure customer-side hardware, including ONTs, ONUs, routers, and PoE switches.

Implement structured cabling (CAT6) and ensure all manholes, FATs, and joints are correctly labeled and documented.
Testing, Commissioning & Maintenance

Perform end-to-end link loss budgets and verify connectivity using OTDR, optical power meters, and VFL checks.

Troubleshoot and resolve last-mile and backbone faults, including repairing fibre cuts and replacing damaged ducts.

Maintain network integrity through proactive preventive maintenance on joint closures and distribution routes.

Participate in a standby rotation to ensure network uptime during weekends and public holidays.
Design Support & Reporting

Conduct field route surveys and contribute data for low-level designs (LLDs) and Bills of Quantities (BoQ).

Update GIS and network inventory systems (QGIS/Google Earth) following every installation or change.

Submit daily field activity reports, detailing material consumption and site progress to the Field Operations Manager.
Professional Requirements
Education & Technical Expertise

Academic Background: Diploma in Telecommunications, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or IT. TVET certificates (Level 5/6) are also accepted.

Proven Tenure: 2–4 years of hands-on experience in fibre field operations. (Juniors with 1+ year experience will be considered).

Equipment Proficiency: Expert use of fusion splicers, OTDRs, and fibre cleavers.

Domain Knowledge: Understanding of GPON architecture, PON link budgets, and basic IP networking (VLANs, PPPoE).

Licensing: Valid Kenyan BCE driving licence (Class A motorcycle licence is a plus).
Soft Skills & Physicality

Physical Fitness: Ability to work at heights (poles/ladders) and in confined spaces (manholes).

Communication: Fluency in English and Kiswahili for stakeholder and customer interaction.

Safety Mindset: Strict adherence to HSE standards and Communications Authority (CA) regulations.
