Job Description
Role Overview
This Technical Director role is the senior engineering authority across a portfolio of government infrastructure and high-rise building projects, each valued at over KES 5 billion. Day-to-day, you will lead multidisciplinary project teams, enforce engineering and safety standards, and ensure every project meets its contractual, budgetary, and schedule commitments. The position is vital to the company because it bridges technical execution and strategic leadership—reporting directly to the CEO and sitting on the Executive Committee—so your decisions directly influence the company’s reputation for delivering complex, publicly funded works with precision and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the full lifecycle of major construction projects, from pre-construction planning and procurement to commissioning and handover, ensuring alignment with contract specifications and engineering standards.
- Supervise and support Project Managers and technical teams across multiple concurrent projects, providing guidance on scheduling, resource allocation, and technical problem-solving.
- Take full ownership of each project’s commercial performance, including budget creation, cost control, margin management, and the approval of variation claims and recovery strategies.
- Act as the executive interface with government ministries, county governments, consultants, and development partners, maintaining relationships and resolving issues at the highest level.
- Lead enterprise risk reviews across the project portfolio, developing mitigation plans for technical, financial, contractual, and operational risks.
- Drive value engineering, digital construction, and innovation initiatives to improve cost efficiency and project quality without compromising engineering integrity.
- Oversee procurement cycles in compliance with Kenyan Public Procurement regulations, and manage subcontractor and supplier engagement to support project delivery.
- Participate in Executive Committee decisions, contribute to strategic direction, and mentor senior engineering staff to build a strong leadership pipeline.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering; a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or an MBA is advantageous.
- Minimum 15 years of professional experience in civil engineering or construction, with a proven record of delivering multiple concurrent large-scale projects valued at KES 5 billion or more.
- Deep knowledge of JBC (Joint Building Council) construction contracts and their day-to-day administration, including variations, claims, and dispute resolution.
- Working familiarity with Kenyan Government Procurement systems, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated ability in project scheduling, value engineering, procurement, and financial management of construction projects.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and an active member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).
- Registration with other relevant professional engineering bodies is a plus.
