Job Description

Role Overview

This is an entry-level grounds maintenance position focused on keeping outdoor areas neat, healthy, and visually appealing. Day to day, you will prepare soil for planting, care for lawns and flowerbeds, and manage routine cleaning tasks across the site. Your work directly supports the overall landscape quality and ensures a safe, orderly environment for staff, visitors, or residents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Dig over planting areas, level uneven ground, and break down compacted soil clods to create a suitable tilth for planting.
  • Water lawns, flowerbeds, borders, and individual plants based on seasonal requirements and prevailing weather conditions.
  • Hand-weed planted areas regularly, removing unwanted growth carefully to avoid disturbing established roots.
  • Apply mulch around herbaceous and woody plants to conserve soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed emergence.
  • Rake lawns to remove fallen leaves, thatch, and debris, helping maintain a clean turf surface.
  • Carry out general cleaning duties such as sweeping paths, picking up litter, and clearing green waste from walkways and work areas.
  • Assist with planting new flowers, shrubs, or grass patches and ensure planted areas are securely settled with soil and water.
  • Use and maintain basic gardening tools correctly, reporting any damaged equipment to the supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade D Plain or higher.
  • Ability to perform sustained physical work outdoors in different weather conditions, including bending, lifting, and digging.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn using hand tools such as hoes, spades, forks, rakes, and watering cans.
  • Reliable attendance and a willingness to follow day-to-day instructions from a supervisor or lead gardener.
  • Basic awareness of workplace safety, especially when handling tools, working near roads, or using water equipment.
  • Prior experience in gardening, farming, or general landscaping is an advantage but not compulsory.
