Role Overview
This position focuses on maintaining order, safety, and a focused learning atmosphere throughout the school day. You will supervise student movement, monitor behavior during transitions and breaks, and support teachers by ensuring classrooms are calm and ready for instruction. Your work directly reduces disruptions, helping students stay on task and making the school environment more secure and productive for everyone.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out regular checks of corridors, restrooms, and classrooms before classes begin so that spaces are clean, hazard-free, and ready for student use.
- Supervise the orderly assembly of students before, during, and after recess, working with student prefects to keep noise levels low and movement organized.
- Monitor the time students take to move between classes, encouraging efficient transitions so that instructional time is not lost.
- Speak with students individually and in groups about why discipline matters, emphasizing how respectful conduct protects everyone’s ability to learn.
- Ensure students enter classrooms quietly after breaks and are seated before the bell or the start of the next lesson.
- Verify that all students are present and in class before the school day begins and again after every recess period.
- Encourage students to engage actively with their lessons, reinforcing a culture of effort and academic focus throughout the day.
- Record attendance, infractions, and other behavioral data accurately in the school’s student information system, including teacher and student reports.
- Contact parents to follow up on unexplained absences and keep families informed about their child’s punctuality and conduct.
- Visit classrooms periodically to observe the learning climate and address any disturbances that interfere with teaching.
- Watch for signs of bullying, fighting, or unsafe behavior, and clearly explain the consequences, such as classroom or after-school detention.
- Escort students to their designated buses after dismissal and confirm that every child boards the correct bus before departure.
- Compile daily summaries of classroom observations, behavioral incidents, teacher concerns, and disciplinary actions taken.
- Support the administration of examinations by helping to supervise exam halls and maintain quiet conditions.
- Apply safety rules consistently and take initiative during school activities whenever a student’s wellbeing or behavior requires immediate attention.
- Attend regular team meetings and training sessions with other staff to review behavioral trends, discuss difficult cases, and align on responses.
- Model and promote the values expressed in the school’s code of conduct or honor code during all interactions with students.
- Handle other duties assigned by school leadership related to student welfare and campus discipline as needs arise.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, counseling, or a related field.
- Strong command of English, both spoken and written, for clear communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
- At least one to two years of experience working with school-age children in a supervisory, teaching, or student-support role.
- Demonstrated ability to enforce rules firmly but fairly while maintaining respectful relationships with students.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening and the ability to de-escalate tense situations.
- Strong problem-solving orientation, with the ability to make sound decisions quickly during emergencies or behavioral incidents.
- Reliable, accountable, and comfortable taking ownership of daily routines and follow-up tasks.
- Willingness to learn continuously and adapt to new school procedures, tools, and student needs.
- Professional conduct and ethical judgment at all times, especially when handling sensitive student information.
- Basic computer proficiency, including data entry and familiarity with student management systems or similar software.
