Role Overview
The Structured Cabling Technician installs, tests and maintains copper and fibre cabling, along with the passive components that carry connectivity across campuses, data centres and CCTV projects. By delivering dependable links, resolving faults promptly and keeping installation records accurate, the technician helps limit service disruption and supports safe, coordinated project handovers. The role covers physical cabling work; configuring or programming active equipment is handled by the client or designated technical teams unless specifically assigned.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, terminate, repair and maintain copper and fibre-optic cabling, outlets, patch panels and related passive infrastructure in accordance with approved layouts and site conditions.
- Test and commission cabling links, document results, correct failed tests and verify work before handover.
- Trace connectivity faults, identify damaged or underperforming links, restore service and escalate issues that need additional resources or client action.
- Respond to maintenance requests and provide emergency support under the applicable service arrangement. Where specified, acknowledge telephone requests within 30 minutes and coordinate a response crew to attend and work toward resolution within four hours; 24/7 coverage may also apply.
- Perform scheduled preventive inspections, identify deterioration or poor connections, rectify installation defects and recommend practical measures to prevent repeat failures.
- Apply relevant ANSI/TIA and ISO cabling standards, manufacturer guidance and site quality requirements throughout installation and maintenance work.
- Label cables and components consistently and maintain cable schedules, as-built information, test reports, maintenance logs and clear service updates.
- Follow site safety procedures, use required protective equipment, protect existing infrastructure and coordinate access, work timing and handovers with authorised client representatives and technical teams.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Computer Networks or a closely related discipline.
- At least four years of hands-on experience installing, testing, commissioning, repairing and maintaining structured cabling systems.
- Manufacturer training or certification in structured cabling installation; relevant cabling design and installation certification is required where applicable. A certification plan may be considered only when the assignment permits it.
- Practical competence in copper and fibre termination, link testing, fault tracing, commissioning and maintenance of passive infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of applicable ANSI/TIA standards, relevant ISO standards and manufacturer installation requirements.
- Experience supporting cabling across organisations or campuses with at least 25 buildings, and direct involvement in data-centre, enterprise-campus or CCTV-related projects involving at least 10,000 network data points or connections.
- Ability to interpret installation layouts, coordinate work across multiple buildings, maintain accurate technical records and communicate clearly with clients and project teams.
- Project evidence for relevant work should identify the client or organisation, project scope, number of buildings and approximate data points or connections, dates and the technician’s role. Completion certificates, reference letters or other verifiable evidence should be included where available.
- Application documentation should include a current signed CV, copies of academic and relevant professional or manufacturer certificates, project references, and referee or employer contact details where available. Provide any further supporting documents expressly requested for the tender.
