This will be achieved through promotion of research and innovations in space science, technology and respective applications as well as enhancing the regulatory framework. It will also spur Kenya’s competitiveness and positioning in playing a critical role in the regional and global space agenda. The history of space activities in Kenya dates back to the 1960s with the establishment of a Satellite Launching and Tracking Base at Malindi. This was a collaborative effort between Kenya and Italy. Over twenty (20) sounding rockets and nine (9) satellites were launched from the facility between 1967 and 1988. Kenya joined the space faring countries on 11th May 2018, when it deployed its first satellite (nanosatellite) into orbit from the International Space Station (ISS). Role Overview

This position focuses on steering the design, implementation, and day-to-day governance of ICT systems that support space-related operations and digital infrastructure. You will be responsible for ensuring that mission-critical data remains secure, available, and resilient, while also aligning technology strategy with the institution’s broader space science and services objectives. The role is central to enabling smooth collaboration across teams that rely on satellite data, remote sensing, and geospatial applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and enforce ICT strategies, policies, and system architectures tailored to space operation requirements, ensuring they remain current and effective.
  • Manage and protect corporate ICT infrastructure and space-related platforms, maintaining data integrity, system uptime, and secure access for all users.
  • Implement robust backup, recovery, and cybersecurity controls to safeguard against data loss, unauthorised access, and system disruptions.
  • Oversee the deployment, configuration, and administration of enterprise systems and specialised space applications, verifying that they meet evolving operational demands.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical faults across space ICT systems, coordinating timely fixes and preventing recurrence through root-cause analysis.
  • Investigate and advocate for cost-efficient and innovative ICT tools that improve service delivery and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on research projects and innovation initiatives involving space digital infrastructure and data services.
  • Support capacity-building efforts by organising training sessions and facilitating knowledge exchange on space ICT services, while also contributing to ICT risk assessments and mitigation plans.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Remote Sensing, Geographical Information Science, Geo-Spatial Engineering, Surveying, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Telecommunications, Software, Computer Science, Information Technology, Control and Instrumentation, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Strong proficiency in computer applications, including office productivity tools, system administration, and relevant technical software.
  • Demonstrated merit and ability, evidenced by consistent performance and tangible results in previous work or academic settings.
  • Familiarity with the operational challenges of space-related ICT, including data-heavy applications and secure system integration, is highly desirable.
