Senior Assistant Director of Medical Services/Medical Specialist I - Ophthalmology

Role Overview

You will serve as the senior clinical expert for all matters related to eye health, working across outpatient consultations, diagnostic testing, and the operating theatre. Your day-to-day work centres on examining patients, identifying complex visual and ocular pathologies, deciding between medical and surgical treatment paths, and guiding patients through recovery. By combining precise diagnostic judgment with skilled surgical intervention, you directly preserve and restore sight for a wide range of patients, from those with chronic degenerative conditions to emergency trauma cases.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform thorough ophthalmic examinations, including tests of visual acuity, pupil response, eye muscle function, and intraocular pressure to assess overall ocular health.
• Diagnose and treat chronic and acute eye conditions—such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, uveitis, and bacterial or viral infections—using appropriate pharmacological therapies and ongoing management plans.
• Carry out surgical procedures for cataract removal, glaucoma drainage, refractive correction (LASIK), corneal repair or transplantation, and vitreoretinal conditions, adapting technique to each patient's anatomy and pathology.
• Deliver urgent and emergency ophthalmological care for ocular trauma, chemical injuries, sudden vision loss, and acute angle-closure glaucoma, making rapid decisions to minimise permanent damage.
• Assess each patient’s surgical fitness pre-operatively, discuss risks and benefits, and monitor post-operative healing to detect and manage complications early.
• Prescribe optical corrections—including spectacles and contact lenses—and fit or refer patients for advanced visual aids where standard correction is insufficient.
• Order and interpret advanced diagnostic investigations such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), visual field analysis, fluorescein angiography, and corneal topography to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.Ch.B) degree from a university recognised by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
• Successful completion of a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology from a recognised institution, with hands-on training in medical and surgical management of eye disease.
• Full registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, accompanied by a valid, current practising licence.
• Completion of a Strategic Leadership Development Programme lasting at least six weeks from a reputable institution, demonstrating readiness for leadership responsibilities.
• A certificate in computer application skills from a recognised training provider, reflecting the ability to work with electronic medical records and digital imaging systems.
• Proven professional competence and managerial capability, evidenced by consistent performance, sound clinical judgement, and the ability to lead or collaborate within a multidisciplinary eye care team.
