Job Description

Role Overview

This position is central to the daily operation of our school, ensuring that learners and staff arrive at their destinations safely and on time. Day to day, you will be responsible for operating a school vehicle on fixed routes and for ad-hoc trips, while maintaining a welcoming, secure atmosphere for passengers. Your vigilance and care directly support the school's commitment to student welfare, making reliability and sound judgment essential in every journey you complete.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a school vehicle on designated morning and afternoon routes, as well as for field trips, sporting events, and other officially approved excursions.
  • Perform a thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the vehicle, checking tyres, brakes, lights, oil, fuel, and emergency equipment, and document findings as required.
  • Keep the vehicle's interior and exterior clean and presentable, including sweeping floors, wiping down surfaces, and ensuring windows and mirrors are unobstructed.
  • Follow all national traffic laws, local speed limits, and the school's internal transport policies, adapting driving to weather, road, and traffic conditions.
  • Maintain a calm and orderly atmosphere inside the vehicle, assisting younger learners with boarding, seat belt use, and disembarking at authorised stops only.
  • Log every journey in the designated transport records, noting route taken, mileage, fuel purchased, passenger counts, and any delays encountered.
  • Recognise early warning signs of mechanical problems, carry out basic checks, and report any fault, accident, or safety hazard to the supervisor immediately.
  • Communicate promptly with school administrators about route changes, traffic incidents, or any situation affecting the arrival or departure schedule.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' professional driving experience, with demonstrable experience transporting children or working in an institutional setting preferred.
  • Possession of a valid driving licence covering the relevant vehicle categories, such as D1, D2, or an accepted equivalent.
  • A clean driving record with no history of serious traffic violations or disqualification.
  • Sound working knowledge of road safety regulations, defensive driving techniques, and child passenger safety practices.
  • Proficiency in carrying out daily vehicle checks, including inspecting fluid levels, tyre condition, and basic mechanical functions, and reporting faults accurately.
  • Strong verbal communication skills in the language of instruction, with the ability to interact respectfully with learners, parents, and staff.
  • A patient, observant, and dependable temperament, with the capacity to remain composed under traffic pressure or in the event of an emergency.
  • Willingness to undergo a background check, medical screening, and any additional safety training required by the school.
