Role Overview
This is a senior technical reinsurance role within a general insurance business, focused on designing, placing, and managing treaty and facultative reinsurance programmes that protect the company’s capital and support sustainable underwriting. Day to day, you will work closely with underwriters, actuaries, claims specialists, and finance teams to assess risk portfolios, structure appropriate reinsurance protections, and ensure that all reinsurance transactions are accurately documented, accounted for, and reported. Your work directly influences the company’s ability to absorb large losses, comply with regulatory requirements, and maintain strong relationships with reinsurers and brokers across the market.
Key Responsibilities
- Review individual policies and whole portfolio data to determine appropriate retention levels, risk transfer needs, and the most suitable treaty or facultative structures.
- Prepare clear technical submissions and supporting data for reinsurers and brokers, including exposure summaries, loss histories, and underwriting performance metrics.
- Coordinate the end-to-end placement and renewal of reinsurance contracts, including reviewing wordings, negotiating terms, and ensuring timely execution and system setup.
- Maintain accurate bordereaux, premium and claims records, and reconcile reinsurance balances with internal finance systems and counterparty statements.
- Manage the notification, documentation, and follow-up of reinsurance claims recoveries, tracking outstanding amounts and escalating any disputes or delays to ensure timely settlement.
- Prepare regular reports for internal management, reinsurers, regulators, and auditors, covering ceded exposures, recoveries, outstanding losses, and programme performance.
- Monitor compliance with treaty and facultative conditions, delegated authorities, internal governance rules, and Kenyan insurance regulations, keeping a complete audit trail.
- Provide technical guidance to underwriting and claims teams on reinsurance contract interpretation, recovery eligibility, and risk appetite parameters, and support the resolution of complex reinsurance queries.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, Business, or a closely related discipline.
- A recognised professional insurance qualification such as ACII, AIIK, or an equivalent; additional reinsurance-specific training or certification is a strong advantage.
- At least seven years of experience in general insurance and reinsurance, with no fewer than three years in a senior specialist, supervisory, or managerial position.
- Proven experience in designing, placing, and renewing both treaty and facultative programmes, including reviewing contract wordings and applying retentions and risk appetite limits.
- Hands-on experience with reinsurance accounting, bordereaux preparation, premium and claim reconciliations, recoveries tracking, and regulatory or statutory reporting.
- Strong relationship management and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence senior internal stakeholders and external intermediaries effectively.
- Advanced analytical and reporting skills, including proficiency with insurance core systems, spreadsheets, and data tools used for exposure and performance analysis.
- Working knowledge of the Kenyan insurance and reinsurance regulatory environment, governance requirements, and international market practice.
