Job Title: Refrigeration Technician
Direct Line Reporting: Facilities Maintenance Engineer / Operations Manager
Industry Sector: Engineering / HVAC & Refrigeration
Gross Salary Structure: Kshs. 40,000 – 50,000
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled, safety-conscious Refrigeration Technician to lead the installation, troubleshooting, and preventative servicing of our heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration networks across Nairobi. Your primary objective is to guarantee the uninterrupted, energy-efficient operation of walk-in chillers, cooling units, and large-scale industrial air handling systems. This position bridges complex mechanical assembly with advanced electrical diagnostics; you will troubleshoot circuit issues, perform high-pressure gas brazing, and swap out critical components such as compressors and expansion valves. The role demands a physically resilient, certified specialist who is fluent in refrigeration cycle mechanics and ready to handle fast emergency system repairs.
Key Responsibilities
System Integration & Precision Installation
- Plan, assemble, and commission commercial refrigeration cabinets, chiller units, and split-system HVAC networks.
- Ensure precise system sizing, load calculations, and structural mounting configurations in strict alignment with technical diagrams.
- Run complex copper piping runs, executing leak-proof soldering and high-temperature brazing to interconnect system components.
- Route electrical wiring, connect sensors, and verify control panel terminal outputs before system activation.
Preventative Maintenance & Quality Checks
- Conduct routine operational audits to identify early signs of compressor fatigue, gas leaks, motor wear, or coil corrosion.
- Clean and sanitize evaporator coils, blowers, and air filtration systems to maintain high indoor air quality standards.
- Monitor, recover, and top up refrigerant gas volumes safely, adhering strictly to environmental handling regulations.
- Lubricate high-friction mechanical components, tighten structural mounts, and test overall unit power draws.
Diagnostic Analysis & Component Restoration
- Diagnose system errors, mechanical failures, and thermal blocks using digital manifolds, clamp meters, and leak detectors.
- Read and interpret control error logs, pressure readings, and electrical schematics to pinpoint the root causes of faults.
- Rebuild or replace defective internal parts, including mechanical compressors, fan motors, solenoids, and thermostat boards.
- Execute system pressure testing, vacuum deep-evacuations, and moisture-purging steps before releasing repaired systems back into service.
Emergency Response, Compliance & Reporting
- Respond to critical facility breakdown alerts, rapidly resolving technical issues to protect temperature-sensitive materials.
- Program micro-controllers, balance regional airflow, and calibrate thermostat cut-off points to optimize energy consumption.
- Keep precise service logbooks detailing gas volumes recovered, replacement parts fitted, and test readings completed.
- Maintain a secure inventory of spare switches, contactors, and fan blades to minimize mean time to repair (MTTR).
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Entry Criteria
- Academic & Professional Credentials: Valid HVAC / Refrigeration certification from a recognized technical training college or polytechnic.
- Field Longevity: Minimum of 5 years of active, hands-on experience installing and maintaining complex commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems.
- Technical Troubleshooting Capacity: Excellent ability to interpret wiring schematics, technical equipment blueprints, and structural piping manuals.
- Physical Fitness: Physically capable of navigating confined plant machinery spaces, working comfortably at heights, and lifting heavy motor components safely.
Technical & Personal Traits
- Tool Fluency: Mastery of refrigeration service tools, including vacuum pumps, brazing torches, recover units, and digital multi-meters.
- Safety & Compliance Focus: In-depth knowledge of local safety standards, electrical wiring codes, and eco-friendly gas disposal practices.
- Clear Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills to update facility managers, explain complex repair paths, and train site users on safe operation.
Benefits & Perks
- Advanced Field Exposure: Work with modern, high-capacity cooling machinery and automated climate control systems across diverse settings.
- Operational Independence: Manage your field service schedules and run diagnostics with a high degree of technical autonomy.
- Career Growth Pipeline: Build a strong technical career path leading toward Lead Field Engineer, HVAC Inspector, or Maintenance Coordinator roles.
