Description:
Sage Publishing is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Publishing Editor to manage and develop a portfolio of social and behavioral science journals. This role focuses on the business, operational, and administrative aspects of academic journal publishing, supporting journal growth, performance improvement, and strategic development.
The successful candidate will oversee journal operations, collaborate with editors, societies, authors, and internal teams, and contribute to improving visibility, engagement, and overall portfolio success. This opportunity is ideal for professionals interested in growing within the academic publishing industry while applying strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage a portfolio of Sage-owned and society journals while supporting strategic growth and daily operations.
• Develop and implement initiatives to improve journal performance, visibility, citations, and indexing opportunities.
• Monitor journal metrics, bibliometrics, financial performance, and market trends to support strategic decisions.
• Prepare reports, maintain project trackers, and support editorial board meetings.
• Assist with editor contracts, renewals, amendments, and related documentation.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with editors, societies, authors, reviewers, and external partners.
• Collaborate with internal teams including marketing, sales, production, and technology departments.
• Monitor financial performance of assigned journals and support revenue and cost management.
• Contribute to departmental strategies, projects, acquisitions, and technology initiatives.
• Mentor Editorial Assistants and Associates by providing guidance and operational support.
• Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within publishing and research communities.
• Maintain accurate files, reports, and administrative records according to company policies.
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum 2 years of publishing experience, preferably with an academic or scientific journal publisher.
• Strong understanding of the journal publication process.
• Excellent English verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Effective public speaking and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to understand research processes and academic publishing practices.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, Teams, and PowerPoint.
• Strong knowledge of:
• Academic journal publishing operations and editorial workflows.
• Reporting, portfolio management, and stakeholder communication.
• Microsoft Excel, project management tools, and digital publishing systems.
• Preferred skills:
• Previous experience as an Editorial Assistant, Associate Editor, Assistant Editor, Managing Editor, or Production Editor.
• Advanced Excel skills including VBA and Macros.
• Familiarity with HTML and publishing technologies.
