Job Description

Role Overview

This position anchors the operational delivery of a multi-county digital health initiative in Kenya that embeds AI-supported clinical decision tools into primary care settings. Reporting to the Director, Impact & Innovation, the Project Manager acts as the central coordination point across government bodies, technical partners, community health actors, and specialist sub-grantees, ensuring that activities from design to rollout stay on schedule, within budget, and aligned with national health priorities.

Day to day, this means turning project plans into concrete actions: tracking deliverables, maintaining partner relationships, supporting sub-grantee performance, organising co-design sessions with health workers, coordinating with regulators, and feeding implementation evidence into a national playbook for scaling AI in Kenyan primary healthcare. The role is as much about operational discipline as it is about fostering trust and collaboration among diverse stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee project execution across the three implementation counties, translating work plans into actionable schedules, monitoring progress against milestones, and flagging bottlenecks or delivery risks to senior leadership.
  • Manage day-to-day coordination with primary partners, specialist sub-grantees, county health teams, and community stakeholders, tracking agreed outputs and maintaining accurate, up-to-date project records.
  • Support the full cycle of sub-grant administration, from agreement preparation and performance tracking to ensuring recipients deliver on their commitments and contribute learning to the project.
  • Prepare and maintain key operational documents, including budgets, risk registers, work plans, and funder reports, while monitoring expenditure and escalating material variances.
  • Coordinate with the Ministry of Health, Digital Health Agency, Office of the Data Protection Commissioner, county authorities, and clinical oversight bodies to ensure regulatory, data governance, ethical, and validation requirements are met.
  • Facilitate participatory landscape assessments and co-design activities with healthcare workers, community health promoters, facility managers, and county teams to define and refine AI use cases grounded in real clinical workflows.
  • Manage phased facility-level rollout of AI-enabled Clinical Decision Support Systems, including change management, healthcare worker onboarding, feedback collection, and incorporation of user input into iterative improvements.
  • Work with monitoring, evaluation, and implementation science partners to collect and synthesise evidence, document lessons learned, and translate findings into practical guidance for the national AI deployment playbook and scaling framework.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Medicine, Public Health, Health Systems, International Development, Digital Health, or a related discipline; a Master's degree or relevant professional certification is strongly preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in health project or programme management within Kenya or East Africa, including a minimum of one year in a supervisory or project-coordination capacity.
  • Demonstrated track record supporting projects that combine health systems strengthening with digital technology, covering work-planning, budget management, risk monitoring, donor reporting, and multi-stakeholder coordination.
  • Hands-on experience administering sub-grants or partnership agreements, particularly with research institutions, clinical delivery organisations, or specialist consultancies.
  • Working knowledge of Kenya's devolved health system and practical experience engaging with national and county government entities, regulators, or data governance bodies in the context of digital health deployment.
  • Familiarity with co-design methodologies, human-centred design, implementation science, and the development of practical tools, playbooks, or knowledge frameworks.
  • Strong operational skills, including the ability to plan and coordinate complex activities across multiple partners and locations while ensuring timely, accurate outputs.
  • Good understanding of primary care workflows, AI-enabled Clinical Decision Support Systems, clinical validation requirements, and data governance considerations in Kenyan health settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across government, clinical, technical, and community groups; proficiency in Kiswahili is an advantage.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, safeguarding, ethical practice, and community-centred approaches, with demonstrated integrity in upholding organisational policies and regulatory compliance.
