Professional Tailor

Role Overview

You will take charge of turning raw fabric, technical sketches, and client fit specifications into finished garments that meet exacting production standards. Working from the Nairobi workshop, you will handle both custom commissions and alteration work, collaborating with designers and the production supervisor to keep daily output on schedule. Your eye for precise stitching, clean seams, and correct drape directly influences the company's reputation for well-made clothing.

Key Responsibilities

• Measure clients with full accuracy and interpret design sketches, paper patterns, and written fitting briefs to plan each garment's construction approach.
• Cut, pin, stitch, and assemble men's and women's apparel, selecting the right seam types and finishes for each fabric weight and style.
• Choose appropriate textiles, interfacing, linings, thread, buttons, zippers, and other trims based on the garment's intended look and durability.
• Perform alterations such as resizing, hemming, taking in or letting out seams, replacing zippers, and repairing structural damage on existing clothing.
• Run client fittings and adjust the garment in progress to improve fit, line, and comfort, ensuring a polished final result.
• Operate industrial sewing machines, overlockers, and pressing equipment safely, carrying out routine cleaning and minor maintenance to prevent downtime.
• Inspect finished work systematically for stitch consistency, seam strength, symmetrical details, and clean pressing before it leaves your station.
• Track fabric usage during cutting and layout to reduce waste, and keep your work area clean, organised, and compliant with health and safety standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

• At least two years of hands-on experience as a tailor, seamstress, or garment technician in a fashion house, factory, or tailoring shop.
• Practical command of industrial sewing machinery, overlock machines, and commercial pressing irons or steam units.
• Solid understanding of garment assembly sequences, seam classifications, alteration techniques, and how different fabric weights behave under the needle.
• Strong manual dexterity, steady hands, precise measurement skills, and keen attention to visual alignment and symmetry.
• Ability to work efficiently against daily production targets while maintaining consistent quality.
• A certificate or diploma in tailoring, fashion design, garment construction, or textile technology is preferred.
• Experience producing both structured menswear and delicate womenswear is an added advantage.
