Job Description

Role Overview

This is a specialist teaching post for an educator who believes that students with additional learning needs belong in the mainstream classroom, not on the edges of it. Working alongside homeroom teachers at Woodland Star, you will shape how lessons are planned, delivered, and assessed so that a wide range of learners can engage with the same curriculum at meaningful levels. The day-to-day work blends direct support for individual students, careful record-keeping, and close communication with families and the wider Learning Support Team — and it matters because inclusive practice here is a core design principle, not an afterthought.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team up with homeroom teachers to plan, teach, and evaluate lessons that stay true to curriculum objectives while reflecting inclusive education principles.
  • Rework tasks, texts, and teaching approaches so learners with differing profiles can access and progress through the same core content.
  • Guide students toward stronger problem-solving, deeper conceptual understanding, and confident knowledge building in line with Common Core Standards.
  • Apply mastery-based approaches to teaching, learning, and reporting so that every learner has a genuine route into the work.
  • Serve as case manager for Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs), or make sure timely updates reach whoever holds that responsibility.
  • Track learner growth, maintain documentation, and share progress openly with teachers, families, and the Learning Support Team.
  • Step in with small-group or one-to-one support during lessons at the moments it will make the most difference.
  • Foster inclusive participation, positive peer relationships, and growing independence, while helping keep the classroom safe, respectful, and curiosity-friendly.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning, student support discussions, professional learning sessions, and school-wide initiatives, and uphold the school's mission, values, and policies.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, or a Bachelor of Education paired with certification in Special Needs Education (SNE).
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in an inclusive or special education setting.
  • Valid TSC registration — this is mandatory.
  • Confident working knowledge of inclusive education practice and learner support strategies.
  • Demonstrated skill in curriculum differentiation and in responding to diverse learning needs.
  • Practical experience building and managing Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs) and monitoring learner progress against them.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a genuine collaborative streak.
  • Reflective, adaptable, and inclusive in approach, and closely aligned with Woodland Star's mission, vision, and values.

Why Join Woodland Star

You will work inside a mission-driven school community that treats inclusive education as a shared responsibility rather than one teacher's portfolio. Colleagues across homeroom teaching, the Learning Support Team, and curriculum planning work closely together, and professional learning and school-wide initiatives are a regular part of the calendar. It is a setting for an educator who wants their differentiation and case-management work to be recognised as central to how the school teaches and reports on learning.
