Job Description
Role Overview
This position centres on running a broad, active physical education and sports programme that keeps students moving, builds their sporting ability, and shapes how they work with others. Day to day, the job combines teaching practical PE lessons with coaching school teams across a wide range of sports, from netball and hockey to swimming and rugby. The person in this role matters because they are the main driver of student fitness, sportsmanship, and healthy habits — and the person who spots and grows the athletes who will represent the school in competition.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead practical PE lessons and sports training sessions that suit different ages, ability levels, and fitness backgrounds.
- Coach students across a multi-sport programme, including netball, hockey, volleyball, handball, rugby, soccer, basketball, and swimming.
- Demonstrate and teach correct technique, rules, tactics, and game strategies, then give students the practice time to apply them.
- Assess student performance, deliver constructive feedback, and track progress so each learner keeps improving.
- Identify students with sporting potential and prepare both teams and individual athletes for competitions and fixtures.
- Organise sports events, tournaments, competitions, and other physical activities on the school calendar.
- Model and reinforce sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, inclusion, and healthy lifestyle choices in every session.
- Maintain sports facilities and equipment, keep them safe and fit for use, and apply first-aid, CPR, injury-prevention, and emergency procedures when needed.
- Keep accurate records covering training sessions, student performance, attendance, competitions, and any sports-related incidents.
Requirements & Qualifications
- At least a Diploma in Sports Science or Physical Education; a Bachelor's degree in a related field is an added advantage.
- Playing or coaching experience in netball, hockey, volleyball, handball, rugby, soccer, basketball, and swimming.
- Solid knowledge of the rules, techniques, tactics, and officiating standards for those sports.
- Teaching and pedagogical ability — the capacity to plan practical lessons, demonstrate skills clearly, assess students, and give useful feedback.
- First-aid and CPR certification, plus working knowledge of sports safety and injury prevention.
- Where applicable, registration or accreditation with the relevant national sports or coaching body or federation.
What We Offer / Why Join
- A role with real breadth: you work across a large number of sports rather than specialising in one, so no two weeks look the same.
- Direct impact on student wellbeing, fitness, and confidence, with visible results in how students perform and compete.
- The chance to build and shape a sporting culture grounded in inclusion, discipline, and sportsmanship.
- Scope to spot and develop talent and to take teams and individuals into competitive fixtures.
