Role Overview
You will take ownership of several technical workstreams within a United Nations environment, ranging from building and migrating a Drupal-based content management system to enhancing a project reporting platform and designing an AI-assisted web tool for waste classification. Your day-to-day work will involve hands-on development, database management, API integration, and deployment support, while collaborating with programme staff to ensure systems are stable, secure, and ready for upcoming reporting cycles. Your efforts will directly improve how environmental data is collected, stored, and used by UN teams and partner governments.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop the MIKE Content Management System on Drupal, including custom module development, content architecture, and administrative interfaces tailored to the programme's needs.
- Migrate existing MIKE content from legacy systems into the new Drupal platform, ensuring data integrity, correct taxonomy mapping, and minimal downtime during the transition.
- Support the deployment of the developed systems to UNICC servers, including configuration management, environment setup, and post-deployment troubleshooting.
- Carry out performance improvements on the UNEP GEF Project Implementation Report (PIR) system, optimising queries, page loads, and overall user experience.
- Prepare the GEF PIR system for the FY2026 reporting period, which includes archiving FY2025 results in an accessible location and building the updated 2026 reporting form.
- Reduce repetitive data entry by pre-populating the 2026 PIR entries with relevant data from the 2025 cycle, while preserving the ability for users to edit or override these values.
- Design and develop a Household Waste Categorization web application for Lesotho, incorporating artificial intelligence to classify waste types from user inputs or images.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Master's degree or equivalent in computer science, information technology, information systems, or a closely related field is required. A Bachelor's degree in these fields combined with two additional years of qualifying professional experience may be accepted instead.
- At least two years of progressively responsible professional experience in software development, systems analysis, or IT-related roles, with demonstrable hands-on expertise in Drupal CMS development, including API integration with Drupal.
- Strong programming background with advanced skills in PHP, Python, and modern MVC frameworks, as well as experience working with Docker Hub and containerised deployments.
- Solid experience building applications with MS SQL and relational databases, including schema design, complex queries, and data migration.
- Proficiency in front-end web technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3, plus working knowledge of React for building interactive user interfaces.
- Proven ability to perform system analysis, design, and programming across the full software development lifecycle.
- Experience working within the United Nations system or similar international organisations is considered an advantage.
