Physical Planner Interns

Role Overview

This position sits at the centre of county-level land use management, where you will review development proposals, help shape local physical development plans, and provide technical advice to clients and government stakeholders. Working under the county director, you will ensure that growth across the sub-county or county is orderly, sustainable, and aligned with national, regional, and local planning policies. The role matters because it directly influences how land is used, how communities expand, and how environmental, social, and economic factors are balanced in the built environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Offer expert technical guidance to stakeholders, developers, and the public on planning and development control matters.
• Receive, assess, and vet development applications to confirm they comply with zoning, land use, and regulatory requirements.
• Assist in preparing local physical development plans, including data collection, mapping, and drafting under the direction of the county director.
• Conduct feasibility studies that examine the physical, social, economic, and environmental characteristics of planning areas.
• Support the implementation of physical planning and land use policies across national, regional, county, urban, and city levels.
• Maintain and update physical planning records, databases, and archives for accurate reference and reporting.
• Coordinate with internal departments and external agencies to align development control decisions with broader planning goals.
• Carry out any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Planning, Town Planning, or an equivalent qualification from a university recognised in Kenya.
• Graduate membership in the Kenya Institute of Planners (KIP), the Architectural Association of Kenya (Town Planning Chapter), or the Town & County Planners Association of Kenya (TCPAK).
• Proficiency in computer applications relevant to planning, such as GIS, CAD, or standard office software.
• Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, which requires integrity, ethical conduct, and leadership in public service.
• Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders and preparing planning documentation.
• Ability to interpret and apply planning laws, policies, and regulations in a county government context.
