Job Description

HR Business Partner – Embedded Role

About the Role

This is an embedded Business Partner role sitting within a designated department. You will be the primary P&C interface for the department, partnering directly with the Head of Department and Line Managers to drive people strategy, operational HR delivery, and employee relations. This is not a generalist support role; it requires someone who can hold their own in complex ER matters, navigate Kenyan employment law confidently, and build credible relationships within a fast-paced, target-driven environment.

What You Will Do

Business Partnering

  • Serve as the dedicated P&C point of contact for your assigned department, advising the HOD and Line Managers on people matters across the full employee lifecycle.
  • Translate business priorities into actionable P&C interventions.
  • Prepare and present people metrics and insights to departmental leadership.

Employee Relations & Compliance

  • Lead end-to-end disciplinary and grievance processes, from issuing show cause notices and chairing hearings through to drafting findings reports and outcome letters, in full compliance with the Employment Act 2007 and company policy.
  • Handle complex ER matters including summary dismissal, misconduct investigations, and formal grievances, with the confidence to defend decisions under legal scrutiny.
  • Ensure all people practices are compliant with the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 and relevant labour legislation.

Performance Management

  • Drive the department's performance management cycle: goal setting, mid-year check-ins, formal reviews, and performance escalation where required.
  • Support Line Managers in managing underperformance using structured frameworks, coaching them on giving effective feedback and managing without demotivating.
  • Identify and manage formal PIPs in collaboration with line managers.

Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Manage end-to-end recruitment for assigned roles, including sourcing, screening, coordinating assessments, and offer management.
  • Oversee structured onboarding to ensure new hires are effectively integrated and up to productivity quickly.

Learning, Development & Engagement

  • Design and facilitate targeted internal training sessions for Line Managers covering feedback, performance management, recognition, and people leadership.
  • Coordinate quarterly departmental training and sensitization initiatives in collaboration with the L&D function.
  • Run and interpret engagement surveys, translating findings into concrete action plans owned at the department level.

People and Culture Projects & Process Improvement

  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional P&C projects, from system requirements and process redesign to policy rollouts and compliance initiatives.
  • Identify and close gaps in HR processes within the department, with a continuous improvement mindset.

What You Will Need

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or Diploma in Human Resource Management or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 6 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in a business partnering or embedded HR role.
  • Certifications: Active IHRM membership in good standing; CHRP-K certification is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrable working knowledge of the Employment Act 2007, Kenya Data Protection Act 2019, and related labour legislation.

Competencies & Skills

  • Fast – able to think outside the box
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple HR functions simultaneously
  • Knowledge of labor laws, HR policies, and performance management best practices
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Commitment to employee engagement, well-being, and development
