Role Overview
You will take charge of a busy clearing and forwarding operation, directing everything from shipment arrival to final delivery. Your focus will be on keeping cargo moving through customs and transport networks without delays, while staying fully compliant with Kenyan regulations. This role is central to protecting the company’s reputation for reliable, efficient logistics and maintaining strong relationships with the authorities that keep trade flowing.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the complete clearing and forwarding cycle for import, export, and transit consignments, ensuring documents are accurate and deadlines are met.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for KRA Customs, Kenya Ports Authority, shipping lines, airlines, container freight stations, and transporters, resolving issues that could stall cargo.
- Keep operations aligned with customs, tax, and regulatory requirements by reviewing procedures and staying current on rule changes.
- Supervise and support the operations team, assigning workloads, providing guidance, and holding staff accountable for performance.
- Track operational KPIs such as clearance turnaround times, cost per shipment, and customer satisfaction, then adjust workflows to close gaps.
- Handle customer escalations and unexpected disruptions, such as cargo inspections or transport delays, with practical solutions.
- Coordinate with clients, warehouse teams, and internal departments to synchronize shipments and keep everyone informed of status updates.
- Manage operational budgets and vendor negotiations, looking for cost savings without sacrificing service quality or compliance.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in a clearing and forwarding environment, including 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
- Deep understanding of import and export documentation, customs clearance procedures, and freight forwarding operations in Kenya.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with KRA Customs, Kenya Ports Authority, shipping lines, airlines, CFS operators, and other regulatory bodies.
- Strong leadership capabilities, with a track record of building cohesive teams and driving operational improvements.
- Excellent negotiation and problem-solving skills, especially when dealing with customs disputes, cargo delays, or client complaints.
- Clear, professional communication skills for engaging both internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Familiarity with customs systems is an added advantage.
