The utility was incorporated under the Companys Act (Cap 486) of the Laws of Kenya as a public company limited by shares on 24th August 2005 and came into full operation on 1st February 2006. This was as a result of the enactment of Water Act 2002 (repealed by Water Act 2016), which brought about far reaching water sector reforms in Kenya separating water resources management from services delivery. As a water service provider charged with the provision of water and sanitation services in Malindi, MAWASCO has the mandate to provide adequate quality water and proper sanitation services to its customers in the most efficient and affordable way. Its also responsible for the routine maintenance of water and sanitation services infrastructure. The company is engaged purely in providing water and sanitation services to the residents of Malindi, Magarini and Kilifi North sub-counties with an estimated water production of 21,000 m3/ day against a demand of 44,353 m3/day. MAWASCO has a license to supply water to about 8,300km2 coverage and with a population of 572,652 persons. As at 2019, the coverage was about 73% for water and 27% on sanitation.   • Malindi Water and Sanitation Company invites qualified, proactive, and results-oriented individuals to apply for the position of Occupational Health and Safety Officer.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 3 years working experience OR
  • Diploma in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Public Health, Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 5 years working experience
  • Professional certification from a recognized body (NEBOSH, IOSH, or
  • NITA/DOSHS-accredited OHS training).
  • Practical knowledge of OSHA 2007, EMCA regulations, and water/sanitation sector safety standards.
  • Strong skills in accident investigation and reporting, risk assessment, and safety training.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and monitor occupational health and safety systems across all utility operations, including water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, fecal sludge treatment facilities, and field desludging activities.
  • Conduct routine hazard identification and risk assessments in accordance with OSHA 2007, WIBA, and related subsidiary legislation.
  • Ensure compliance with EMCA (1999), NEMA regulations, WASREB guidelines, and County sanitation bylaws.
  • Develop and review OHS policies, SOPs, emergency response plans, permits-to-work, and confined- space entry procedures.
  • Conduct staff and contractor training on workplace safety, chemical handling, biological hazard prevention, and safe FST operations.
  • Lead investigation and reporting of incidents, near misses, and occupational illnesses while maintaining statutory records.
  • Coordinate workplace registration, audits, and inspections with the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS).
  • Oversee PPE standards, hygiene facilities, and safe use of machinery and equipment.
  • Support safe handling, transport, and reuse of treated sludge products in compliance with NEMA and County requirements
