This will be achieved through promotion of research and innovations in space science, technology and respective applications as well as enhancing the regulatory framework. It will also spur Kenya’s competitiveness and positioning in playing a critical role in the regional and global space agenda. The history of space activities in Kenya dates back to the 1960s with the establishment of a Satellite Launching and Tracking Base at Malindi. This was a collaborative effort between Kenya and Italy. Over twenty (20) sounding rockets and nine (9) satellites were launched from the facility between 1967 and 1988. Kenya joined the space faring countries on 11th May 2018, when it deployed its first satellite (nanosatellite) into orbit from the International Space Station (ISS). Job Description

Role Overview

You will be part of a specialist unit that keeps national positioning and navigation infrastructure accurate, dependable, and ready for real-world use. Your daily work will involve turning satellite observations and geodetic measurements into operational services, maintaining technical documentation, and verifying that systems perform within expected tolerances. You will also support broader initiatives in emergency response, land administration, and scientific research, where even small positioning errors can have serious consequences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and update operational guidelines, technical specifications, and standards used for positioning infrastructure and related data services.
  • Conduct baseline studies and gap analyses of national reference frameworks, identifying vulnerabilities, outdated components, and opportunities for modernisation.
  • Support field campaigns and data collection efforts tied to disaster risk reduction, search and rescue coordination, and national mapping programmes.
  • Test positioning outputs for consistency and accuracy, document performance trends, and propose corrective measures when anomalies are detected.
  • Track how government and commercial users apply navigation technologies, then compile practical recommendations for enhancing service delivery.
  • Prepare technical briefs, project proposals, and partnership documents that help secure funding or promote collaboration with external organisations.
  • Organise and maintain datasets, scientific literature, and experimental records for research studies aimed at improving system resilience and precision.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, astronomy, aerospace or aeronautical engineering, remote sensing, geomatics, surveying, civil or electrical engineering, telecommunications, computer science, software engineering, information technology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Hands-on familiarity with standard office productivity tools, spreadsheet analysis, data manipulation, and GIS or mapping platforms used in geospatial work.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver consistent, accurate results under deadlines, supported by academic or professional achievements.
  • Capacity to interpret complex technical subject matter and communicate it clearly in written reports and team discussions.
  • Detail-oriented and collaborative working style, comfortable contributing to multi-disciplinary projects that affect public safety and national infrastructure.
