Job Description

Role Overview

This field-based position places the mentor at the heart of BOMA's SOIL Program in Marsabit County, working directly with participating households, business groups, and savings groups. The mentor delivers monthly coaching, training, and follow-up visits while connecting participants to markets and other services, helping them build stronger livelihoods, healthier diets, and greater resilience. Acting as the frontline link between BOMA and the community, the mentor reports to the Field Officer and must be a trusted member of the local area.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead participant mobilization, targeting, and enrolment, and support the formation and strengthening of VSLA/savings groups and business groups.
  • Conduct monthly mentorship and household follow-up visits, using participatory visioning and action plans to help families set and track practical goals.
  • Deliver hands-on training in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, agri-nutrition, and life skills, and coach participants on business planning, record keeping, and market linkages.
  • Facilitate savings group sessions on responsible borrowing, budgeting, and productive investment, and link viable groups to formal financial services where appropriate.
  • Promote nutrition-sensitive practices such as kitchen gardens, dietary diversity, and regenerative agriculture, and refer household members to health actors when needed.
  • Track participant progress, capture accurate data using approved digital tools, and flag emerging risks or underperforming households to the Field Officer.
  • Mobilize community stakeholders, including leaders, Community Health Promoters, and government extension officers, and support community champions who model good practices.
  • Plan daily field activities, manage assigned equipment responsibly, and follow BOMA's security, safeguarding, and accountability procedures.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Resident of Marsabit County with strong knowledge of the local community, culture, and language(s).
  • Diploma or degree in community development, social sciences, agriculture, public health, or a related field.
  • At least three years of experience in community facilitation, mentorship, or field-based program delivery, ideally involving savings groups, livelihoods, or nutrition.
  • Proven ability to train, coach, and motivate diverse groups, including women, youth, and men, in rural settings.
  • Comfort using mobile data collection tools and digital reporting platforms; prior experience with tablets or smartphones for monitoring is an advantage.
  • Willingness to travel extensively within the project area, sometimes by motorcycle, and work flexible field hours.
  • Strong commitment to confidentiality, child protection, inclusion, and treating all participants with dignity and respect.
