Role Overview

We are seeking a visionary, clinically elite Medical Director (Head of Medical Services) to anchor the strategic clinical governance, service integration, and healthcare delivery models of our comprehensive hospital facility in Embu. Your primary mandate is to steer the entire medical ecosystem—encompassing inpatient, outpatient, surgical theater, maternity, and diagnostic wings—into a benchmark center for evidence-based medicine and patient safety. This position bridges high-level administrative health systems management with active clinical leadership; you will supervise multi-disciplinary teams of specialists, medical officers, and nursing leads while driving strict quality assurance matrices and institutional budget efficiencies. The role demands a decisive, KMPDC-registered professional who possesses seasoned command over hospital operations, risk mitigation frameworks, and modern clinical auditing protocols.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Governance & Quality Assurance

  • Formulate, standardize, and systematically review clinical policies, evidence-based care protocols, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) across all departments.
  • Establish comprehensive clinical governance frameworks to track patient safety indicators, diagnostic accuracy, and treatment outcomes.
  • Spearhead robust Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols, driving institutional readiness for national healthcare accreditation inspections.
  • Lead formal mortality reviews, clinical audits, and medical complications panels, instituting fast systemic corrections to prevent therapeutic deviations.

Workforce Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Deliver direct executive oversight and professional mentorship to Medical Officers, Specialists, Clinical Officers, and advanced nursing practitioners.
  • Manage clinical staff performance loops, executing objective appraisals and designing structured performance improvement plans (PIPs).
  • Map out continuous training gaps, coordinating a high-impact calendar of Continuous Medical Education (CME) seminars and clinical case reviews.
  • Cultivate an institutional culture rooted in strict medical ethics, absolute professional accountability, and seamless inter-departmental teamwork.

Patient Experience & Risk Management

  • Enforce patient-centered care strategies across all contact points, ensuring clinical workflows minimize waiting times and optimize recovery pathways.
  • Investigate and resolve complex clinical escalations, patient complaints, and ethical dilemmas with immediate professional diplomacy.
  • Guarantee total compliance with national healthcare statutes, Ministry of Health guidelines, and the regulatory standards of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • Structure proactive clinical risk mitigation programs, tracking medical malpractice exposures and maintaining absolute licensing validity for all practitioners.

Fiscal Oversight & Resource Optimization

  • Partner with the hospital administrative board to construct and manage the comprehensive annual clinical department budget.
  • Audit the consumption velocities of essential pharmaceuticals, surgical consumables, and high-value laboratory reagents to eliminate institutional wastage.
  • Author technical procurement briefs for cutting-edge diagnostic hardware and theater machinery, ensuring sound return-on-investment equations.
  • Compile and present exhaustive monthly operational metrics, quality indicator logs, and clinical capacity reports for senior board-level reviews.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Entry Criteria

  • Academic Foundation: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from a recognized, accredited university.
  • Advanced Specialization: A Master’s degree in Medicine (MMed), Public Health (MPH), Health Systems Management, Healthcare Administration, or an MBA is highly desirable.
  • Professional Licensing: Current, unblemished registration and licensing by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) holding a valid annual practicing certificate.
  • Leadership Tenure: Minimum of 5 to 7 years of progressive clinical experience, with at least 3 years explicitly executed within a senior medical management, Medical Superintendent, or clinical supervisory role inside a busy Level 4 or higher hospital facility.

Executive Attributes

  • Crisis Orchestration: Superior emotional resilience and sharp decision-making capabilities to lead complex emergency responses and mass casualty events calmly.
  • Resource Acumen: Strong financial literacy with practical exposure to hospital cost-containment programs and asset lifecycle tracking.
  • Diplomatic Articulation: Masterful communication capabilities to align multi-disciplinary clinical specialists, administrative boards, and external regulatory bodies.

What We Offer

  • Institutional Command: Take full operational ownership of a rapidly developing medical center, stamping your signature on long-term clinical strategies.
  • Diverse Case Management: Expand your professional profile by managing complex medical infrastructures across critical care, emergency, and surgical theaters.
  • Strategic Career Elevation: Solidify your footprint in executive healthcare administration, unlocking advanced consultation paths on national and regional public health platforms.
