Job Description

Role Overview

You will serve as the primary in-house legal advisor for a busy hospital, providing day-to-day counsel on a wide spectrum of legal issues that arise in a clinical and administrative setting. Your work will involve reviewing agreements, interpreting regulatory requirements, advising on patient-related legal risks, and coordinating litigation. Your judgement will directly protect the institution from liability and help leadership make sound decisions under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, including vendor agreements, service-level agreements, employment-related documents, and clinical collaboration arrangements.
  • Provide practical legal advice on patient care matters such as informed consent, medical records handling, patient confidentiality, and medico-legal disputes.
  • Monitor and interpret applicable Kenyan healthcare legislation, regulations, and licensure requirements, and advise management on compliance obligations.
  • Manage litigation by preparing briefs, instructing external advocates, attending court proceedings, and maintaining accurate records of all active cases.
  • Conduct legal risk assessments of hospital operations, including clinical procedures, procurement activities, and institutional policies, and recommend mitigation measures.
  • Develop and update internal policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures to ensure alignment with current law and industry best practices.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities, government bodies, and other external stakeholders on legal and compliance-related matters.
  • Train hospital staff on legal issues relevant to their roles, such as documentation, consent, and handling complaints in a legally sound manner.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognised institution.
  • A minimum of 3 years of legal experience, specifically gained within a large, fast-moving hospital or healthcare environment.
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and possession of a valid practising certificate.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound, risk-based decisions in complex environments where priorities compete and information is often incomplete.
  • Proven capacity to understand and integrate broad institutional goals, spot potential regulatory and compliance exposures, and align legal advice with wider organisational objectives.
