Job Description

Role Overview

This position places you at the heart of a boutique Nairobi law firm with an established dispute resolution practice. On a typical day, you will move between courtroom appearances, file preparation, and client consultations, carrying matters from initial filing through to judgment or settlement. Your advocacy and written work will shape the firm’s standing in the legal community, so every argument, document, and negotiation must reflect both technical rigour and an understanding of the client’s commercial reality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act for clients in court and tribunal sessions, covering case conferences, interim applications, hearings, and full trials with clear and effective oral advocacy.
  • Draft and file legal documents including plaints, defences, responses, affidavits, and skeleton arguments, ensuring each document is accurate, persuasive, and filed within the relevant procedural rules.
  • Carry out detailed legal research on statutes, delegated legislation, and case law to support legal arguments and identify risks or opportunities in current matters.
  • Prepare advisory opinions, formal client correspondence, settlement agreements, and other commercial legal documents that translate complex legal positions into practical guidance.
  • Instruct and prepare witnesses for hearings, and conduct examination-in-chief and cross-examination where the matter requires.
  • Track all diary dates, court orders, and statutory deadlines across multiple files, ensuring no step is missed and that each case moves forward efficiently.
  • Engage professionally with opposing counsel to explore settlement or alternative dispute resolution routes while protecting the client’s interests.
  • Review evidence, conduct due diligence on relevant documents, and maintain structured case files that support the firm’s broader litigation workflow.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Between one and two years of post-admission litigation experience in a busy law firm, with proven exposure to court practice and procedure.
  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at upper second class level or equivalent from a recognised university.
  • An active practising certificate from the relevant Kenyan legal authority.
  • Strong drafting skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and technically accurate court documents and legal opinions.
  • Excellent research capabilities and the confidence to interpret statutes, rules, and judicial decisions independently.
  • Advanced verbal communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to interact persuasively with clients, colleagues, and the judiciary.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment when handling complex or urgent matters.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise workloads to meet tight court deadlines.
  • A professional and ethical approach, coupled with a positive attitude and the willingness to take initiative within a collaborative team structure.

What We Offer / Why Join

This is an opportunity to develop your advocacy skills within a close-knit boutique firm where your contributions are visible and valued. You will benefit from direct mentorship from senior partners, exposure to a wide variety of disputes, and the chance to take on meaningful responsibility early in your career. The firm offers a dynamic, fast-paced environment that rewards proactive lawyers who are serious about building a reputation in litigation.
