Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits within the Group’s legal function, providing end-to-end legal support across contracts, litigation, and advisory work. Day to day, you will draft and negotiate commercial agreements, manage legal disputes and court processes, and advise internal teams on regulatory and governance questions. Your work directly protects the Group from legal and financial risk while enabling business units to move forward with contracts and initiatives confidently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including NDAs, MOUs, service level agreements, leases, procurement and tender documents, SaaS and IT contracts, vendor and supplier agreements, and other commercial contracts.
  • Provide practical legal advice and conduct research on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and operational issues affecting different parts of the Group.
  • Prepare clear legal opinions that help internal departments assess risk and make informed business decisions.
  • Receive and handle legal notices, demand letters, statutory notices, and summons; coordinate responses and escalate as appropriate.
  • Manage litigation and legal claims, including subrogation, recovery, and third-party claims, and maintain oversight of associated reserves and case strategies.
  • Attend court hearings and represent the Group where required, while also coordinating effectively with external advocates.
  • Maintain the Group’s legal diary, track case deadlines, ensure timely filings, and keep legal registers and compliance records up to date.
  • Support contract negotiations and commercial dispute resolution across departments, and deliver training to staff on legal awareness, contracting procedures, and compliance obligations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognised university.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice and admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
  • At least 5 years of relevant legal experience in an insurance company, corporate environment, or law firm, with a demonstrated focus on contracts, legal advisory, and litigation support.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex legal issues and communicate them clearly.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, enabling effective collaboration with internal teams, external counsel, and counterparties.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines, and handle multiple matters simultaneously.
  • Solid teamwork orientation and computer literacy, including proficiency with standard legal and office software.
