Lecturer in Pharmacognosy

Role Overview

This position carries a full academic workload for a scholar who wants to combine classroom teaching with an active research agenda and a hand in shaping how the department is run. Day to day, the post-holder teaches four courses each semester, supervises student research from proposal through to final submission, and guides students through academic advising and mentoring. Beyond the classroom, the role is a leadership one: contributing to curriculum design and review, taking part in departmental administration, and supporting colleagues so the department operates smoothly and consistently.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach four courses per semester at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, including preparing lecture materials, leading seminars or practical sessions, and holding office hours for student questions.
• Design, set, and mark assignments, continuous assessments, tests, and final examinations, returning grades and constructive feedback within institutional deadlines.
• Supervise student research projects and dissertations, guiding candidates on topic selection, methodology, literature review, and academic writing standards.
• Provide academic advising and mentoring to students, helping them plan their studies, resolve academic difficulties, and progress towards completion.
• Maintain a personal research programme and publish in refereed journals, contributing to the department's overall research output and profile.
• Participate in the development, periodic review, and updating of curricula to keep programmes current and aligned with accreditation and professional requirements.
• Support the smooth running of the department through committee service, participation in meetings, coordination of course delivery, and handling routine administrative duties.
• Offer leadership and guidance to other departmental members, including junior colleagues, and assist in coordinating academic activities across the department.

Requirements & Qualifications

• An earned PhD or equivalent qualification in the area of specialisation or a closely related field from an accredited and recognised university.
• Registration with the relevant professional body, or eligibility to register where such a body applies.
• In special cases, a master's degree in the area of specialisation or a relevant field from an accredited and recognised university, combined with substantial academic or professional experience.
• At least three years of experience teaching at university level, or equivalent experience in research or in industry.
• A minimum of 24 publication points, of which no fewer than 16 must come from refereed journal papers.
• A born-again Christian who is an active member of a local church.
