Role Overview
You will take charge of fibre network field operations, guiding crews through installations, preventive maintenance, and emergency fault recovery across the service area. Your day involves moving between distribution hubs, splice points, and customer locations to ensure every connection performs at the required standard. The quality of your work directly determines uptime for clients, so you will combine hands-on technical skills with strong coordination and clear reporting to keep the network healthy.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct field crews during fibre cable installation, termination, and network expansion projects, assigning tasks and monitoring progress to meet deadlines.
- Perform fusion splicing at distribution hubs and customer premises, then verify link integrity using light sources, optical power meters, and OTDR equipment.
- Identify, localise, and repair fibre network faults while respecting service level agreements and minimising downtime for affected users.
- Enforce technical standards and health and safety procedures on every job site, conducting quality checks before and after work is completed.
- Cooperate with assistant technicians to deliver skilled labour, and compile accurate job completion reports for supervisors.
- Provide customers with clear guidance on basic connection troubleshooting and answer questions related to fibre service, ensuring a positive experience even during outages.
- Maintain close communication with NOC personnel, giving timely updates on fault status, restoration efforts, and any issues that may require further escalation.
- Take on additional operational duties as assigned, supporting the wider field team whenever demand requires.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma or degree in telecommunications, fibre optics, or a closely related technical discipline.
- At least two years of hands-on experience in a similar field role involving fibre network installation or maintenance.
- Sound understanding of fibre network architecture, including transmission principles, splitting, and common causes of signal loss.
- Proven ability to handle, strip, clean, and splice fibre with care, using appropriate tools and following best practice.
- Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, with the confidence to make on-site decisions that keep restoration efforts on track.
- Familiarity with safety regulations applicable to working in pits, on poles, and within customer premises, along with a commitment to consistent quality assurance.
