Role Overview
This position anchors the day-to-day operations of a well-established legal practice in Kirinyaga, working directly with licensed advocates to keep client matters moving efficiently. On a typical day, you will dig into statutes and precedents, turn research into clear written documents, track deadlines across multiple files, and act as a reliable bridge between the firm and its clients. Your accuracy directly determines whether filings are submitted on time, files are ready for court, and the practice runs without avoidable friction.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct focused legal research on statutes, regulations, and case law, then distil findings into concise memos, case summaries, and hearing briefs for advocate review.
- Draft, format, and proofread legal pleadings, contracts, affidavits, and formal correspondence to ensure they meet court and client standards.
- Maintain structured physical and electronic case files, promptly updating records and safeguarding confidential client information at all times.
- Monitor litigation calendars, including court hearings, registry return dates, and client appointments, and proactively flag upcoming deadlines.
- Prepare and lodge documents at court registries, government offices, and administrative bodies, then track their status and retrieve records as needed.
- Assemble case bundles, evidence logs, and supporting materials ahead of court appearances, mediations, and client meetings.
- Handle incoming calls, schedule appointments, and serve as an administrative liaison between advocates and clients or external parties.
- Support advocates with general office workflow and any urgent document-related requests that arise during active matters.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B), Paralegal Studies, or a closely related discipline.
- Prior practical experience as a paralegal assistant, legal secretary, or legal intern in a law firm, legal aid setting, or corporate legal department.
- Working knowledge of legal research methodologies, court filing procedures, document formatting conventions, and standard law firm workflows.
- Strong legal writing and proofreading capabilities, with the ability to produce error-free documents under time pressure.
- Excellent organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail when managing multiple files and deadlines simultaneously.
- Demonstrated integrity and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential client matters.
- Solid time-management and prioritisation skills, comfortable working independently under the direction of senior advocates.
- Candidates based in or near Kirinyaga County are particularly encouraged to apply, as the role requires daily on-site attendance.
